Tesla Expands India Footprint: 20 Superchargers Installed as Ahmedabad Gets New Service Centre

Tesla is expanding its electric vehicle ecosystem in India with 20 Superchargers now installed across the country and a new Tesla-Approved Body Shop and service centre opened in Ahmedabad. The move improves the company's charging and after-sales infrastructure as it attempts to penetrate the Indian market.

Tesla India Country Head Sharad Agarwal confirmed the installation of 20 Superchargers during the opening of the Ahmedabad facility. The company is still working on charging infrastructure in major Indian cities at the same time to cater to its growing customer base, he said.

The Ahmedabad facility is another step in Tesla's service expansion. This is now the seventh body shop and service centre in India, the company said, with Gurgaon, Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune and Mumbai. The new location will offer Tesla owners in Ahmedabad and across Gujarat the ability to repair bodywork and collision repair and service after sales.

The Tesla-Approved Body Shop will use genuine Tesla parts and trained technicians and will conduct repairs as per Tesla standards. This is particularly relevant when Tesla wants to increase customer confidence in India, where service and repair infrastructure are a necessity for premium EV owners.

Agarwal said Tesla vehicles require limited scheduled maintenance and many service-related issues can be addressed through remote diagnosis. Tesla also provides 24/7 service assistance, but the company is expanding its physical network as the Indian EV market develops.

The charging network is another major component of Tesla's India strategy. The company currently has 20 Superchargers, and its wider charging network also includes Destination Chargers. Tesla had previously said it would set up charging corridors connecting major cities like Delhi, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Chennai.

The Tesla Supercharger directory currently lists locations in cities such as Gurugram, Navi Mumbai, Mumbai and New Delhi, which is indicative of the company’s expansion.

The company's approach is not limited to public charging. Tesla is also developing home charging capabilities and said at the time of the launch that installation support was available in a vast number of Indian states earlier this year. The company has positioned charging infrastructure as a foundational element of ownership and not just an extension of the service.

Tesla's expansion into India is part of a larger strategy to expand its fleet of vehicles. Currently, they sell the Model Y and the larger Model YL in India. And recently, launched the Model YL (three-row, six-seat electric SUV) with an initial price of ₹61.99 lakh, giving Indian customers another opportunity to buy in the premium EV market.

The expansion of service infrastructure is especially important for Tesla because the company follows a direct-to-consumer model in India. Agarwal said Tesla has already delivered vehicles to customers in 21 states— so the company's customer base extends well beyond cities with established Tesla facilities.

So Ahmedabad’s new facility has special meaning beyond the city itself. Gujarat is a major automotive and industrial market, and having a Tesla service and body repair center for them would help to make ownership more attractive to customers throughout the state.

Tesla’s growing infrastructure presence also comes at a time when the premium electric vehicle market in India is increasingly competitive. Luxury car companies and new EV manufacturers are also expanding their offerings and charging, service and ownership support are becoming more important to consumers.

For Tesla, the strategy is clear: build the ecosystem alongside the vehicles. The installation of 20 Superchargers, expanding destination charging, and opening up additional service and body shop facilities are to address practical concerns around EV ownership.

Now that Ahmedabad is part of Tesla’s service network, the company is moving toward a broader national footprint. The next phase will likely be connecting more major cities and highways while increasing after-sales support.

The latest developments indicate that Tesla is in fact attempting to create a more complete ecosystem for electric vehicle ownership in India: vehicles, fast charging, home charging and physical service. As the Indian customer base becomes bigger, the strength and reach of this infrastructure could be very much in its favor.
