The Yamaha R15 and KTM RC 160 are still two of the best options available for those who want to enter the world of fully-faired sports motorcycles. Both bikes are sporty, modern, and dynamic, yet they differ from each other in style and performance.
The Yamaha R15 is the cheapest but still the best to buy for around ₹1.71 lakh and ₹1.87 lakh (ex-showroom). The KTM RC 160 is slightly higher on the price ladder, at ₹1.85 lakh-₹1.93 lakh. The difference in prices is tiny but KTM is much more aggressive in their performance-oriented approach.
Yamaha has a clear advantage from an efficiency perspective. The R15 gives a claimed mileage of around 45 kmpl and is a good choice for daily commuting and long-distance riding. The KTM RC 160 is around 36 kmpl which is a good mileage for sports bikes but it is significantly lower than the Japanese racer.
Performance is where the battle gets interesting. The KTM RC 160 has an engine that produces around 19 PS of power with a bigger 164.2cc liquid-cooled power figure. Yamaha R15 has an 18.4 PS liquid-cooled engine but has its VVA transmission in place to keep it strong throughout the rev range.
The Yamaha has a smaller engine but still achieves a much higher top speed (around 140 km/h) compared to around 118 km/h for the KTM RC 160. It is its aerodynamic design and tuned engine that has given it that advantage.
The two motorcycles are also different. The R15 strikes a good balance between normal use and sporty performance. It is elegant, comfortable enough for daily commuting and comes equipped with a full digital instrument cluster, traction control, dual-channel ABS and some variants have a quick-shifter.
The KTM RC 160 is more track-oriented. Its aggressive riding posture, sharper handling and premium 37 mm upside-down front forks appeal to those who like the action of turning and a race-inspired experience.
For most buyers, the Yamaha R15 is the more complete package. It is cheaper to run, has better fuel economy, a faster top speed and is one of the most popular motorcycles in the market. But riders who like to be aggressive, feel fast, get into the action with more acceleration and sporty handling will like the KTM RC 160.
And both motorcycles are good, so I’ll go for the Yamaha R15 and KTM RC 160. The key is to take more practical riding and not much performance.
