There will also be rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds in Bengaluru, which will affect parts of the city. Even though the weather will change, people will be warned to remain on alert. A warning about the next three hours is circulating for those going home and taking a safe trip.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast cloudy skies with one or two spells of rain or thundershowers over Bengaluru today, with thunderstorms and lightning in the vicinity of the city. A separate forecast by the Meteorological Centre in Bengaluru says there will be thundershowers and gusty winds of 30–40 kmph in Bengaluru Urban and Bengaluru Rural. However, this three-hour alert should be checked against the latest official nowcast before it can be classified as a real-time warning.

The weather change is as northeast monsoon activity begins to impact South India. The IMD has predicted rainfall and thunderstorms in parts of Karnataka and southern interior districts for the last few days. A developing weather system and associated atmospheric conditions are going to bring rain to some areas, and there might be gusty winds in some of them during thunderstorms.

So Bengaluru’s weather will be quickly changing, with a cloudy sky giving way to sudden showers. The intensity and timing of rain can vary from neighbourhood to neighbourhood, so residents should not assume one is in the same situation. People heading out for work, education, shopping (and other things that are on the way) should take the weather forecast into account before travelling.

Showers might slow the flow of traffic during the heaviest traffic as well as during peak commuting periods. Roads with poor drainage may experience temporary waterlogging, and wet surfaces can be especially dangerous for two-wheeler riders.

Heavy showers will slow down traffic on other roads and flyovers and connecting routes as they may be less visible during heavy showers and they are more likely to slow down on major roads, flyovers and connecting routes when they are in use. People in office and on the road will have to slow down and travel slowly to ensure that they’re able to keep an eye on the road, stay away from other vehicles, and slow down without crashing.

Two-wheeler riders should also wear properly fitted helmets and avoid driving in waterlogged areas of the road where potholes or open drains may be in the way. Pedestrians walking through busy roadways during heavy rain should be warned to be careful when crossing roads. When moving in a thunderstorm, one should avoid walking under trees and near unstable structures to shelter from the rain.

Thunderstorms can also pose dangers to trees, temporary buildings, construction sites and exposed electrical equipment due to strong winds. Lightweight objects on balconies and terraces should be secured from being blown away by strong winds. Residents should stay away from damaged power lines, fallen branches and flooded electrical installations during thunderstorms -- it is safest to stay away from these hazards.

If lightning strikes, people outdoors should move into a substantial enclosed building or a hard-topped vehicle rather than sheltering under a tree. Outdoor activities should be postponed when thunderstorms are taking place - particularly in open grounds and exposed areas. Drivers should be careful around large trees, hoardings and construction barricades if wind speeds increase. Such precautions are especially important when rain and strong winds occur suddenly and the response time is very brief.

The weather department’s forecast for Bengaluru also indicates that unsettled conditions could continue beyond Thursday. The IMD city forecast lists cloudy skies and rain or thundershowers on October 16 and 17, with moderate rain or thunderstorms on October 18. Thunderstorms and lightning are also included in the warnings for these dates.

The overall forecast for Karnataka is also showing active rainfall in many southern interior districts, and some areas are at risk of heavy or very heavy rain. These forecasts do not mean that every neighbourhood in Bengaluru will receive continuous rainfall, but that local weather conditions can vary significantly. Residents are advised to check the latest IMD bulletins for rainfall intensity, wind conditions and warning periods before making outdoor plans.

In the meantime, Bengaluru residents should stay informed, plan their journeys carefully and avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rain or thunderstorms. The recommendation to head home early is a precautionary measure, keeping in mind the short-term alert, but its exact three-hour warning window should be confirmed with an official live update.

The IMD’s forecast suggests the possibility of rain, thunderstorms and lightning in Bengaluru, and the local forecast mentions gusty winds of 30–40 kmph at isolated places. Residents should be prepared for rain protection, check traffic conditions and follow instructions issued by local authorities. Looking at the latest official bulletin before travelling is the safest way to know the immediate weather risk in their area.
