IAS officer Vikas Marmat has been transferred by the Andhra Pradesh government following an alleged incident of an argument against police officers at a pub in Bengaluru. A video of the encounter was circulated on social media and there were calls for disciplinary action.
Marmat, a 2019 batch IAS officer, was Project Director of Kuppam Area Development Authority (KADA). He has been directed to report to the General Administration Department (GAD) for further posting, according to The Times of India.
Why was IAS Officer Vikas Marmat transferred?
The Andhra Pradesh government initiated action after Bengaluru police registered a case against Marmat and three others in connection with the incident at a bar and restaurant on Residency Road.
The incident occurred at 1.30 am on October 10, 2026, when a Central Crime Branch (CCB) team visited pubs and other venues. The inspection was a means to verify customers' ages and to monitor underage drinking, the report said.
A confrontation started when officers asked some customers to produce documents to prove their age, the police complaint said. Marmat and his associates argued with the police personnel, used abusive language and attempted to assault officers.
After the incident, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu directed the Chief Secretary to submit a detailed report. The state government transferred Marmat and asked him to report to the General Administration Department.
Who are the other people named in the case?
Besides Marmat, the case also names three other people:
- Abhay Uday Singh: a real estate businessman.
- - Nitish: reported to own a competitive-exam coaching centre in Bihar.
- - Roshan: a bouncer. Police identified Marmat as the main accused with the other three named as co-accused.
According to the police account in The Times of India, Marmat and the others apologised for their conduct the next morning.
What happened during the Bengaluru Pub Inspection?
The inspection was conducted by a CCB team led by Inspector Arun Salunke. Officers were checking identity documents as part of an enforcement drive covering pubs, bars and restaurants in parts of Bengaluru.
The complaint also stated that officers questioned customers about their ages. The accused confronted the police team, abused officers and obstructed them from their duties.
A video of the encounter circulated on social media soon after, drawing attention to the incident. Under the provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), police filed a case at Cubbon Park police station under the categories of causing hurt, criminal intimidation, intentional insult and assault or criminal force against a public servant.
The allegations are part of a criminal case and cannot be considered as established guilt.
Political and Administrative Reactions
Andhra Pradesh political leaders also criticised the officer’s conduct, with opposition leaders demanding action.
The Chief Minister's order to the Chief Secretary to submit a report was followed by Marmat being transferred. The administrative action places him under the General Administration Department for a further posting.
The transfer is separate from the criminal case in Bengaluru. The police case and any further departmental action are two different processes, and the outcome will be subject to the relevant investigations and decisions by the authorities.
