Tamil Nadu Weather Today: Heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected in Tamil Nadu today, as the northeast monsoon begins to take hold over the southern parts of the state. An orange alert is in effect in six districts, with heavy to very heavy rainfall in some parts of Tamil Nadu and heavy rain forecast for other areas.
Chennai and other parts of the state are also likely to experience rain, and roads and traffic congestion and disruption to life in Tamil Nadu will also be caused by it. People have been advised to follow official weather updates and be on their feet during heavy rain and to take precautions during the heavy rain in the rainy weather.
The six districts that are currently on an orange alert are Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Villupuram and Ranipet. In the case of heavy rainfall, these areas could be very wet. Heavy rain can affect road visibility and make it challenging to travel in the low-lying areas and areas prone to waterlogging. Nilgiris and Coimbatore are hilly, and the Western Ghats, and people need to be worried about the weather if there is really heavy rainfall for a long time. People who live in these places can make sure to check local advisories before going out.
The weather department has also forecast isolated heavy rainfall in 25 other districts. They include Chennai, Chengalpattu, Theni, Dindigul, Madurai, Tirunelveli, Kanniyakumari, Tiruppur, Vellore, Kallakurichi, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Erode, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Salem, Ramanathapuram, Tiruchy, Namakkal, Cuddalore, Karur, Perambalur and Ariyalur.
Rainfall intensity will vary from one district to another, and some will receive light showers, and some will get heavy rain. Residents should not expect that the conditions will be the same throughout the day, as thunderstorms can develop quickly.
The rain will affect people in Chennai, office-goers, students and people travelling around the city. Recent showers have already caused waterlogging in some places, including under the Chetpet bridge, and by Saturday morning, there was already waterlogging in some places.
Driving in the city will be affected by rain and traffic jams will also be slow due to drainage problems in the roads in places such as Chetpet Bridge and other places. Motorists should keep a safe distance from other vehicles, avoid driving through flooded areas and take longer for their journey to arrive. Pedestrians should also be careful when walking on waterlogged roads, where drains are open, and where electrical facilities are affected by rain.
Light to Moderate Rain with light thunderstorm and lightning is likely at isolated places over Nagappattinam, Thiruvarur, Thanjavur, Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Tenkasi, Nilgiris Pudukottai, Coimbatore, Ramanathapuram districts of Tamilnadu and Karaikal area. https://t.co/vTTWFnupNI

Thunderstorms and lightning are also a concern during this state of unsettled weather. The IMD has warned of thunderstorms across the region, and strong winds may be expected in some areas. People should shelter in large buildings or enclosed vehicles if thunder is heard and avoid standing beneath isolated trees or near electric poles during lightning.
Residents of hilly regions are warned to be vigilant for local alerts, especially if heavy rain continues for a long period of time. Farmers, construction workers and people doing outdoor work should follow the safety advice and put off work in the event of danger.
The active rain spell is coming just after the northeast monsoon has started over Chennai, Puducherry and Karaikal. The IMD is predicting that rain and thunderstorm activity could continue over the next couple of days, and there could be heavy to very heavy rains for the next week in some parts of the region.
Weather will change as atmospheric systems develop, so people should get periodic updates from the IMD and district administration instead of unverified social media messages. School and college closures should be confirmed by official district announcements. With heavy rain expected in a number of places where heavy rain is expected in the weekend’s weather forecast on Saturday, staying informed and taking sensible precautions will be a must-do as well as taking precautions, however, to stay in touch and be informed and safe and sensible.
