An alleged abduction, unlawful confinement and assault of a 22-year-old man has been reported in Karnataka’s Chitradurga district. The complaint says the young man was taken against his will to a private hospital in Davanagere for genital surgery without his consent. Two suspects, Anushka and Nalina, have been arrested as part of the case.
The incident has raised serious concerns about bodily autonomy, unlawful confinement, alleged human trafficking and the protection of vulnerable people. Police are investigating the allegations and examining the circumstances of the alleged surgery, the confinement of the victim and the injuries he reported to have received. The accusations are still under investigation and being investigated by the government.
According to the complaint, the young man lived in a rented house in Chitradurga for about four years and earned his money through a small flower-selling business. He provided flowers to temples and was acquainted with one of the accused. The complaint claims that the accused and another person pressured him to wear women’s clothes and dance against his wishes.
The violence went from coercion to physical control and culminated in the incident on September 1. The victim was blindfolded with a cloth and taken in a vehicle to the private hospital in Davanagere to be subjected to genital surgery without his consent, said the doctor. The medical circumstances and whether the procedure was carried out with any form of authorisation are matters that need to be investigated.
After the surgery, the young man was brought back to Chitradurga and locked in a room in Budranagar area near Stadium Road, the complaint said. From the outside, he was not allowed to leave. The alleged confinement continued for several days, during which the victim was in pain and in distress. One particular major allegation is that on September 11, one of the accused placed a heated piece of charcoal near the surgical wound.
The victim suffered burns on both thighs, the complaint said. The complaint alleges that he was assaulted when he cried out in pain. Such allegations have only added to the seriousness of the case, with investigators looking to see if he was in a state of pain when he was in confinement or not.
The complaint also states that the accused released the young man on September 29 and instructed him to beg at Challakere Circle in Chitradurga city. When he was released, he contacted his family and told them that he was unable to walk properly and was suffering from bleeding, exhaustion and severe discomfort. He was then taken to a private hospital in Jajjur and taken to the government hospital in Parashurampura for treatment. He was admitted to medical care after the alleged ordeal, according to the information given. His health condition and extent of his injuries will be the focus of the ongoing investigation.
The case was formally reported after the victim's father filed a complaint on October 9. Police filed a case under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) covering unlawful assembly, assault, wrongful confinement, kidnapping, criminal conspiracy and human trafficking.
Such provisions are indicative of the seriousness of the accusations, but the precise charges and their applicability would depend on the evidence collected by investigators. Police have arrested the two accused persons identified as Anushka and Nalina. Investigators are expected to question them and establish their alleged roles in the events described in the complaint.
The case has also brought home to all of us the significance of consent in medical treatment. Any surgical procedure must comply with the requirements of the law and medical laws, and if the surgery was performed without consent from the victim, there would be very serious problems.
The investigation will need to determine whether the procedure was performed without consent or not and if the victim was unlawfully restrained by the surgeon before and after the surgery. Medical records, testimony from witnesses, hospital records and forensic evidence are all key to getting the truth.
The alleged incident is a serious criminal matter involving claims of coercion, physical violence and deprivation of personal freedom. The victim will need to receive appropriate medical care and protection while the investigation proceeds. At the same time, the allegations should be assessed on the basis of evidence and due process. The arrests are an important development in the case, but further investigation and court proceedings will be necessary to establish individual responsibility and determine the legal outcome.
