WhatsApp Parental Controls: Can Parents Read Teen Chats? Here’s What They Can Actually See

Parents often wonder how much control they can have over a teenager’s WhatsApp account especially if parental controls allow them to read private chats. WhatsApp’s latest parental-control tools are designed to give parents visibility into certain account activity and settings, but they do not give parents access to the contents of personal messages.

As WhatsApp says, personal messages are protected by end-to-end encryption. That means WhatsApp can’t read the teen’s private messages through the parental control features and a parent using those features can’t view his or her private messages.

Can parents read WhatsApp messages

No. WhatsApp’s parental controls do not provide parents with a way to open and read their child’s private conversations. Personal messages are end-to-end encrypted, meaning their contents are protected from access by WhatsApp and others.

These are rather account activity controls, privacy settings and some features that parents might want to control.

What can parents see

On parent-managed accounts, parents can receive activity information about their child’s WhatsApp use. For example, WhatsApp says parents can see when their child adds a new contact or when the size of a group they belong to changes.

Parents can also get notifications about some activities. That may include an alert when the child receives a message request from an unknown contact. Parents can customize notifications for some other activities.

What can parents change

WhatsApp's parental controls can allow parents or guardians to manage an array of settings. Depending on the account and the region, this might be message requests, privacy settings and activity alerts. Parental controls are protected by a parent PIN.

WhatsApp is also rolling out controls for Meta AI, Channels and Status. Parents can also control the Meta AI experience of their teen with standard and less common settings. They also decide which channels a teen can follow and whether or not they can create Channels.

For Status, parents can manage who their teen can see and who can see the teen’s Status, and options include contacts, selected contacts, contacts except selected people, or nobody.

Are these controls available everywhere

Not necessarily. WhatsApp says parental controls for teens and parent-managed accounts are being rolled out gradually and may not be available in every region. Users should keep WhatsApp updated to the latest version.

WhatsApp’s approach is to give parents access to chosen activity and control over certain safety and privacy settings while keeping conversations private. For families, the features are intended to provide additional supervision but do not allow parents to take a direct look at conversations in private chats.
