Student Death at Greater Noida Hostel Raises Concerns Over Youth Mental Health

A 21-year-old postgraduate student was found dead in his hostel room in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh, and police are investigating the reasons for the death. Nishant Shakya was in his first year of Master of Computer Applications (MCA) course and had come to the city from Kannauj district.

According to Hindustan Times, the incident came to light on Thursday, October 15, when the student’s roommate returned to her accommodation in Knowledge Park. The roommate found that the door was locked from inside and informed hostel staff of the student’s unresponsive nature. Police and forensic teams arrived at the site.

The student was taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. His body was sent for a post-mortem examination, and his family was informed.

Police suspect suicide, but the circumstances surrounding the death are still under investigation. No suicide note was retrieved from the room, and authorities have not ruled out a possible motive for the incident.

What did the police say?

Knowledge Park police station house officer Vinod Kumar said investigators were investigating and seeking information about the circumstances before the death.

The officer said, “No suicide note was recovered from the spot, and an investigation is underway to ascertain the cause behind the extreme step.”

The officer said the roommate could only give limited information because they had only known each other for a short period of time. Police said the exact reason would be determined after recording statements from family members and other relevant individuals.

Investigators are reviewing the evidence, and post-mortem results will be a part of the investigation. It would be premature to assume any kind of connection between the death and academic pressure, personal difficulties or other circumstances unless further information comes to light.

Galgotias University's response

Galgotias on Instagram posted condolences for the student and their family. They also claimed that the incident happened outside. But this incident does raise questions about how educational institutions and private hostels reach out to people in distress and provide mental health support. These are broader problems that are worthy of attention but don’t suggest that institutional failure at this point caused this death.

Student suicides in India: What the numbers show

The incident has come at a time when student mental health in India is still an issue. The National Crime Records Bureau’s Accidental Deaths and Suicides in India report for 2023 recorded 13,892 student deaths by suicide, or 8.1% of the 171,418 suicides reported nationwide that year. Almost 39 deaths a day.

The number of student suicides increased from 13,044 in 2022 to 13,892 in 2023 (a rise of around 6.5%). That was compared to 8,423 recorded in 2013 (about 64.9%). These figures refer to officially recorded deaths, not every suicide attempt or psychological distress. This is also a major issue; often, many people idealize and attempt suicide with no one noticing the signs, or to support them, many doctors claim that while men commit more suicides, often women choose less violent methods and suffer in silence.

Several factors are associated with suicide, according to government data, including family problems, professional or career problems, isolation, abuse, violence, mental disorders, financial loss, and addiction. Exam-related difficulties and relationship problems are among the causes mentioned in official reporting for students.

These categories do not explain why a person died. Suicidal behaviour is complex and has many interacting factors. A single event cannot be reduced to an academic, family or personal trigger without evidence.

Psychotherapy and suicide prevention.

The death shows the importance of mental health services for students who live away from home. Schools, parents and hostel owners can help by facilitating conversations, confidential counselling, training staff on how to recognize distress and letting students know where to seek professional help.

Students need not feel that they have to handle massive distress alone or that asking for help is a sign of weakness. Behaviour changes, persistent withdrawal, hopelessness, or statements that life is no longer manageable should be taken seriously. If you listen to people with no judgment and you make them feel safe and supported by professionals, they will make a difference.

Mental health and crisis helplines in India

Tele-MANAS: 14416 or 1-800-891-4416 — the Government of India's free, confidential, 24-hour mental health support service, available across states and union territories.

AASRA: +91 22 2754 6669 — a 24-hour emotional support helpline.

Emergency assistance: 112, India’s national emergency response number when immediate danger needs urgent help.

The Tele-MANAS service received more than 47.75 lakh calls by October 2026, which is in line with the growing use of telephone-based mental health support. If someone is in immediate danger, contact emergency services and stay with them if it is safe to do so. If you or someone you know is in extreme emotional distress, contact a trusted person or mental health professional rather than waiting for the situation to get worse. Many people online complain that these helplines tend to be useless in the situation because they can’t change somebody’s situation. It is still important to note that even a listening ear can be comforting to many people sometimes. There are also queer helplines from various queer organizations, but complaints come around that they aren’t picked up. Which I hope changes soon. Since queer people often are some of the high-risk cases, as many often grow up with severe loneliness.

The police investigation into the Greater Noida student’s death is going on. There is no clarity as to the circumstances of this case, but it is an example of how important it is to report accurately about a student’s health problems, give the student timely mental health care, and take extra care of the student’s well-being in order to be safe.

Also, please refrain from sharing the video of the incident across social media; it is grossly insensitive to the family of the deceased.
