INDIA Bloc Meets Today: SIR Row and Gyanesh Kumar Removal Demand Take Centre Stage

The opposition INDIA bloc will meet in New Delhi on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, to coordinate their views on the ongoing debate of Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and the functioning of the Election Commission of India.

The meeting comes at the time when opposition parties are calling for the resignation or removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Leaders will have to plan together a joint approach and we expect that there could be nationwide protests on this issue.

Why Is the INDIA Bloc Meeting Being Held?

The meeting has been called against the backdrop of opposition concerns about the SIR exercise and recent reports about differences within the Election Commission about aspects of the electoral-roll revision process.

The INDIA bloc will discuss how its constituent parties can coordinate their response and whether to launch a larger agitation on the issue.

According to reports, a draft notice seeking the removal of Kumar may also be discussed during the meeting.

Gyanesh Kumar's Resignation Becomes Key Demand

The demand for Gyanesh Kumar has become one of the central points of the opposition campaign.

Congress, Trinamool Congress, Left parties and other opposition groups have raised questions about the Election Commission's handling of the SIR process and have called for Kumar's removal.

The opposition is also expected to consider a fresh parliamentary removal motion. This would be another attempt by opposition parties to take up action against the CEC.

These are opposition parties’ demands and allegations, not established findings against the Election Commission. The Election Commission has maintained that differences or observations during institutional deliberations are part of the process and has defended the legality of its decisions.

Who Is Expected to Attend?

The senior INDIA bloc leaders are expected to attend the meeting, including Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi.

Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee are also in Delhi for the meeting. Opposition parties from other parts of the country are expected to attend.

However, participation is not entirely uniform. Akhilesh Yadav will not attend personally and another SP representative will be present, the Tribune reported. Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray is expected to participate virtually.

SIR Row Takes Centre Stage

The SIR exercise is at the heart of the latest political confrontation.

Opposition parties have pointed out that voter lists are being altered and names were deleted and want to see more transparency about the process and coordination in political action.

The Election Commission rejected the notion that internal discussion is institutional discord over the final decisions and has maintained that its orders are legal and follow statutory procedures.

Nationwide Protest Plan May Be Discussed

Another very important agenda is the possibility of a coordinated nationwide agitation.

Congress general secretary K.C. Venugopal said in advance of the meeting that opposition parties would discuss suggestions from different leaders before finalising an action plan.

The INDIA bloc could therefore use the meeting to decide the next phase of its campaign over SIR and the Election Commission.

When Did This Happen?

The INDIA bloc meeting is going to be held on September 30, 2026, in New Delhi. The meeting was convened three days prior after opposition leaders like Mamata Banerjee, Congress leaders and Left representatives had been discussing it.

The development was confirmed by reports from India Today, The Week, The Tribune, NDTV and PTI-based reports, thus the September 30 meeting and its broad agenda are independently verifiable.
