Palghar Crime: Two Men Arrested for Alleged Sexual Assault, Threatened to Kill Woman’s Four-Year-Old Son
Two men have been arrested in Maharashtra’s Palghar district for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman and threatening to kill her four-year-old son if she reported the incident to the police, officials said on Saturday, October 17.
The accused were identified as Suraj Yadav and Vishal by the police. They were arrested by Virar police on Friday after a complaint filed by the survivor. They have been booked under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), he said.
The accused were taken to court and remanded in police custody for four days. The police are investigating the circumstances of the alleged assault and the threats against the woman and her child, he said.
According to senior inspector Lalu Ture, the incident took place on the night of October 8 when the woman’s husband was away from home. We suspect that the accused targeted the woman in the absence of her husband and sexually assaulted her.
After the alleged assault, police said the men threatened to kill the woman’s four-year-old son if she came forward or spoke to the police. The accused left the scene after issuing the threats, the police report said.
The threat against the child is one of the biggest features of the charge and the accused did so using fear and intimidation to prevent the survivor from reporting the incident. The police have filed a case based on her complaint, and taken the two accused into custody.
Investigators have also highlighted the relationship between the accused and the survivor’s family. Senior inspector Ture said Yadav and Vishal were friends of the woman’s husband and had regularly visited the family’s home. Their familiarity with the household is part of the circumstances described by the police.
The case has made clear the need for survivors to report sexual violence and that survivors who are victims of sexual violence can seek help without fear of retaliation against their family, especially young children. Threats against family members, particularly young children, can increase the barriers for people who are going to contact law enforcement.
The four-day police custody remand will allow investigators to question the accused and examine the allegations in greater detail. The case will be further developed based on the ongoing investigation and the evidence gathered by the authorities.
The allegations against the two men have not been established in court. Both men are entitled to due process and the investigation will determine the facts of the case.
Police have not disclosed any new evidence or any further developments in the investigation. The case is still under investigation and more will come out in the legal process.
The incident was reported by the Press Trust of India (PTI), which quoted police officials in Palghar district, Maharashtra.
