A Catholic priest in Ecuador died when a large wooden crucifix fell on him as he was celebrating Mass at a church in Guayaquil. The tragic incident took place on the weekend as part of a livestream of the religious service and it shocked parishioners and viewers who were there.
The priest was Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari who served at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, also known as Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro. The Archdiocese of Guayaquil confirmed his death and offered condolences to his family, friends and to all those who were involved.
Crucifix Falls in Livestreamed Mass
The accident took place during an evening Mass at the church in Guayaquil, a major city in southwestern Ecuador.
Footage of the service showed Father Sánchez Molinari standing near the altar when the heavy wooden crucifix mounted on the wall behind him suddenly detached and fell. The structure struck him on the head and took him out of view of the camera.
The Mass was being broadcast live on social media, so worshippers and online viewers witnessed the incident as it unfolded.
Some parishioners could be heard yelling for help as they rushed toward the priest. The livestream had just started and was recording the momentary panic before the broadcast finished.
Parishioners Rush to Help the Priest
The abrupt fall of the crucifix meant the religious service was thrown into an emergency. People in the church came to the priest and tried to help him after the impact.
According to reports, Father Sánchez Molinari died after the incident. Details of his death, such as whether he died at the scene or after medical help, were not fully reported in the first reports.
The cause of the crucifix falling from the wall also was unclear. It was not publicly known whether the incident was because of mounting failure or structural damage or both.
His death was confirmed by the Archdiocese of Guayaquil.
The Archdiocese of Guayaquil confirmed the priest’s identity in a statement posted on social media on Sunday, October 18.
The archdiocese offered grief for his death and prayers for his soul, and conveyed its support to the Redemptorist community, his family and friends.
Father Sánchez Molinari belonged to the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, or Redemptorists. The Catholic religious order is known for missionary work, preaching and service to communities.

Incident Raises Questions About Church Safety
The accident has brought home to people the importance of properly securing heavy religious structures and fixtures inside places of worship.
Large crosses and crucifixes (especially around altars) are common in churches. Stabilizing such structures and regularly inspecting them can reduce the risk of accidents with worshippers, clergy and visitors.
But investigators or church authorities have not publicly commented on what caused the crucifix to fall in this case. So any explanation of faulty installation or structural weakness would be premature.
A Great Loss for the Catholic Community
Father Sánchez Molinari’s death has left his congregation and all religious people grieving for a sudden loss during a service of worship.
As we grieve we also know one thing is still tragic - that an unexpected accident can disrupt even the most solemn gathering. The circumstances of the falling crucifix could be revealed if authorities or church officials speak more about it.
