Why His Decision Is Striking a Chord
The announcement has turned everyone’s minds to success, family and choices people make at different stages of life.
Working overseas, distance from aging parents can make things difficult emotionally and practically for professionals. Career opportunities may require them to live thousands of kilometres away, so they can’t be there when their families need them.
Shanmugam’s decision shows that after years of professional success, what’s the point of being happy at work is to do well.
Many social media users have welcomed his decision and praised him for stepping away from a prominent position to spend more time with his family.
A Personal Choice Amid the AI Boom
Shanmugam's retirement comes during the rapid development in artificial intelligence when technology companies are competing to build more capable AI tools.
His decision has also aroused online speculation on whether changing US immigration policies influenced his decision. But he said it was because he wanted to spend more time with his elderly parents in India when he retired.
His story ultimately centers on a personal choice: choosing time with family over continuing a demanding career.
Shanmugam is about to embark on a new chapter after 23 years at Microsoft, one that will be centered around getting closer to his parents and paying more attention to the people who matter most to him.
