Ukraine’s military drone operations have been disrupted by the suspension of the use of Starlink satellite communication terminals that are used by drones in the military after restrictions on the use of Starlink satellite communication terminals attached to the drones have been imposed on drone communication terminals on drones.
Ukraine’s military drone operations have been disrupted as Russia is again attacking Ukrainian cities and energy infrastructure with a variety of drone operations and it has raised fears in Ukraine that a critical technology used by Ukrainian forces, as Russia continues to attack Ukrainian cities and power plants.
🚨 BIG BREAKING: 11 of the 17 Starlink antennas at a reportedly secret ground facility in Bulgaria were set ablaze and destroyed by two masked individuals. The antennas are linked to Ukraine’s naval drone operations. The incident follows a similar attack on a Polish military site equipped with Starlink terminals in late September. #Bulgaria #Ukraine #Starlink #RussiaUkraineWar

The reported restrictions come amid growing tensions between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and US President Donald Trump. Ukraine also fears it will be cut off from military intelligence and with the support of the U.S. in its war effort against Russia.
Starlink restrictions disrupt Ukrainian drone missions.
SpaceX, a company run by Elon Musk, reportedly imposed speed limits on Ukrainian Starlink terminals mounted on drones. Serhii Beskrestnov, an adviser to Zelenskyy, said the restrictions disrupted several military missions.
Starlink provides satellite internet to Ukraine's armed forces for communication and battlefield operations. The system is also capable of long-range drone missions, interceptor drones to combat aerial threats, frontline logistics and other military operations.
The reported restrictions made some Ukrainian drones more vulnerable to Russian air defences because they could no longer maintain the same speeds while using the satellite connection.
By late Wednesday, October 14, Ukrainian operators were reporting improved connectivity, reaching speeds of around 161 kilometres/hour (100 miles/hour) according to Zelenskyy. But, as Ukrainian officials said, this was insufficient for some missions that involved intercepting faster jet-powered Russian drones.
The Ukrainian government has sought clarification on the restrictions and called for them to be lifted. SpaceX had not made public the reported service change in coverage available at the time.
Why Starlink Is Important for Ukraine's Military.
Starlink has become a critical information system as Russia has aggressively invaded Ukraine in February 2022. Satellite communications network enables military units to stay connected even in areas that do not have the usual communication infrastructure (band-aids and technical support).
A stable connection in drone operations can help operators communicate with equipment and carry out long distance missions. Restrictions on connectivity can therefore affect both offensive operations and defensive efforts to intercept incoming drones.
The latest disruption has laid bare Ukraine’s reliance on technology provided by a private company based in the U.S. It also raises questions about how vulnerable military operations can be when a critical communications system suddenly disappears.
However, it is unclear how wide the disruption and its long-term effect on Ukraine’s battlefield capabilities would be.
Ukraine Reports Lack of Early Warning Before Russian Missile Attack.
The Starlink failure was accompanied by fears about the lack of advance warning before an initial Russian ballistic missile attack on Kyiv.
Ukrainian Air Force spokesperson Yurii Ihnat said the country did not receive the usual warning before the first attack on Tuesday night. Warnings were made before three additional waves of missiles had fallen.
Zelenskyy did not specify which Western partners he was talking about when he spoke about the missing warning. The development raised concerns about possible changes to intelligence-sharing arrangements, especially with the United States.
But the available reports did not show that Washington had stopped sharing intelligence with Ukraine. A Ukrainian lawmaker sitting on the parliamentary Defence Committee told The Associated Press that intelligence sharing with allies had not stopped. Trump has also said the United States has not stopped sharing intelligence with Kyiv.
Russian attacks kill civilians and damage energy infrastructure.
Russian attacks on Kyiv continued from Tuesday evening until Wednesday morning, with Ukrainian police reporting five deaths and 36 injuries.
Zelenskyy also said Russian forces targeted Ukraine’s power grid, oil facilities and gas infrastructure for a third consecutive night. He accused Moscow of continuing its aerial campaign despite Trump’s call for an end to attacks on energy infrastructure.
According to Ukrainian officials, Russia launched 39 ballistic missiles and more than 120 drones at infrastructure in Kyiv, the surrounding region and Kharkiv during one overnight attack. Zelenskyy said at least 600,000 people were left without electricity.
Russia’s Defence Ministry said its forces had attacked Ukrainian energy infrastructure including six power plants. These claims and figures were reported by the respective parties and have not all been independently verified. The continued strikes have put Ukraine’s energy system in a state of stress as it prepares for colder weather.
The deal between Trump and Putin raises fears of US support.
For the first time in many years Washington and Kyiv have been at odds after Trump’s reported agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin to import Russian diesel. Western nations have imposed sanctions on Russia for its invasion of Ukraine.
Trump also criticized Zelenskyy during the war and called for Ukraine to elect a new president. His administration has tried to put an end to the fighting but the settlement has not been achieved.
The timing of the Starlink restrictions has led some Ukrainian officials to ask if the change is connected to the political situation. Beskrestnov said the timing was not coincidental but did not provide any evidence that it was.
No public evidence is there that the restrictions were imposed as retaliation for Ukraine’s actions or political disagreements with Washington. The reason for the change is still unclear.
Zelenskyy Seeks further support from European Allies.
Zelenskyy arrived in London on Wednesday for talks with Britain’s prime minister Andy Burnham, and also met King Charles III at Buckingham Palace. Burnham announced that British-made air-defence systems would be delivered to Ukraine much faster and the UK would continue to support Kyiv.
European leaders have expressed concern over Russia’s larger military ambitions, and they’re working to see that Ukraine is supported by the United States and its European partners.
The new developments have intensified Ukraine’s requirement for reliable communications, intelligence and air-defence equipment as Russian attacks continue.
Ukraine Claims Gains on the Eastern Front.
Despite the problems with Starlink, Ukrainian military officials said that they had made progress against Russian troops in eastern Ukraine. Ukrainian forces had recaptured 277 square kilometres (107 square miles) in a summer operation, Brigadier General Andrii Biletskyi of Ukraine’s Third Army Corps, said.
The claim could not be independently verified, and Russian officials did not comment on it in the report.
Russia’s Defence Ministry separately said its air defences had intercepted hundreds of Ukrainian drones over Russian areas, Crimea and the Sea of Azov. These numbers were Russian military claims and were not independently confirmed in the report.
