The beginning of October brings a routine news: the Nobel Prize winners are announced. From scientific breakthroughs to literature, peace initiatives and economic research, there are news alerts in a few days. This is not just one of those random things but a planned annual event: Nobel Week.
The official Nobel Prize announcement will take place on October 5 & October 12, 2026. Each category is given its own announcement date, selection process and committee to choose its laureates.
Why do Nobel prizes get announced on different days?
The Nobel Prizes honour achievements in a variety of fields. As the evaluation of scientific discoveries in scientific research requires different expertise from literary achievements or peace efforts, the awards are conducted in separate institutions and committees.
The staggered schedule gives each category its own moment of public attention. It also allows journalists, researchers and audiences to understand the work being recognised rather than treating all the awards as one announcement.
The 2026 schedule started with the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine on October 5, followed by Physics on October 6 and Chemistry on October 7. The Literature prize was announced on October 8, while the Peace Prize announcement took place on October 9. The last announcement was for Economic Sciences on October 12.
What are the six Nobel Prize categories?
The annual announcements are in six categories:
-
Physiology or Medicine: Recognises discoveries that advance understanding of the human body, disease and medical treatment.
-
Physics: Honours important discoveries and contributions to understanding the physical universe.
-
Chemistry: Recognises advances in chemical science and its applications.
-
Literature: Celebrates outstanding literary work.
-
Peace: Recognises efforts to promote peace, cooperation and conflict resolution.
-
Economic Sciences: Honours research that advances understanding of economic systems and challenges.
Although Economics is often called a Nobel Prize, the actual name is the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel. It was set up by the central bank of Sweden in 1968 and first awarded in 1969.
Who decides the winners?
Different institutions select laureates in different categories. The Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet selects the Medicine laureates and the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences picks the winners in Physics, Chemistry and Economic Sciences.
The Swedish Academy selects the Literature laureate, and the Norwegian Nobel Committee is responsible for the Peace Prize.
These separate selection processes help to make sure that candidates are assessed by experts in their field. At the end of the process, the decisions are made.
When will the Nobel Prizes be awarded?
October's announcements disclose who has won each award and the achievements that are being recognised. The Nobel Prize event usually takes place on December 10, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death.
The Peace Prize ceremony is held in Oslo, Norway, and the other Nobel Prize ceremonies in Stockholm, Sweden.
Why Does Nobel Week Matter?
Nobel Week draws worldwide attention to research, creative work and solutions to global problems. It lets people know how discoveries and contributions are made that would be restricted to specialist areas.
The many announcements therefore are part of a well-organised tradition. Rather than announcing every winner on one day, the Nobel institutions spread the news over a week to recognize the distinct achievements of each laureate and explain their significance to the world.
