In IT companies looking to start or grow their career, salary is a factor when choosing a company. Cognizant pays quite differently for jobs, experience, skills, location and level of the employee.

Based on current job and salary data, Cognizant employees in India can earn anywhere from entry level packages of around Rs 4 lakh per year to much higher salaries for experienced professionals. The exact amount depends heavily on the role.

As per Glassdoor's current salary data, a Programmer Analyst at Cognizant has reported annual pay of around Rs 4 lakh to Rs 5 lakh. Software Engineers have reported salaries in the range of Rs 6 lakh to Rs 10 lakh per year, while Associates have reported around Rs 7 lakh to Rs 10 lakh. Senior Associates can earn between Rs 12 lakh and Rs 22 lakh annually, based on reported salaries.

These figures are employee-reported data, so they should not be taken as guaranteed salaries for every employee.

Cognizant Salary for Freshers

Freshers usually start at the lower end of Cognizant’s salary structure. One of the most common entry-level roles is Programmer Analyst Trainee.

Glassdoor currently shows an average base salary of roughly Rs 4 lakh per year for Cognizant Programmer Analyst Trainees, based on more than 5,000 salary submissions. It also reports average additional pay of around Rs 22,000 per year.

Another salary tracking platform reports total compensation of around Rs 4.2 lakh per year for Cognizant's entry level L1 Programmer Analyst role. It lists higher compensation as employees move into Associate and Senior Associate levels.

Indeed's latest data puts the average annual salary for a Junior Software Engineer at Cognizant in India at around Rs 4.35 lakh. Its reported range runs from around Rs 2.21 lakh to Rs 7.15 lakh according to the available salary data.

These numbers make it clear that freshers should look at the job title and offer letter in their minds rather than a company-wide salary figure.

A fresher joining as a trainee may receive a different package from someone joining as a software engineer with specialised technical skills.

The final take-home salary will also be lower than the annual CTC because the package can include employer contributions, variable pay and other components. Employees should therefore check the salary breakup before comparing two job offers.

How is salary changed with experience?

Cognizant salaries typically increase as employees move into higher roles and gain experience.

For instance, Glassdoor currently lists Software Engineer salary at around Rs 6 lakh to Rs 10 lakh per year. Senior Associate salaries are reported to be around Rs 12 lakh to Rs 22 lakh. Project Manager salaries are much higher and the annual salary is around Rs 18 lakh to Rs 28 lakh.

Levels.fyi also shows a significant difference between levels. Its current data puts the median total compensation for Cognizant software engineers in India at around Rs 7.56 lakh per year. The reported range runs from about Rs 4.2 lakh for L1 to around Rs 27.2 lakh for L5.

The role itself is the key.

A programmer analyst, software engineer, data engineer and project manager do not have the same responsibilities, so their salaries can vary significantly.

Indeed’s current data shows an average annual salary of around Rs 6.55 lakh for Software Engineers at Cognizant. It also lists Programmer Analysts at around Rs 4.34 lakh, Data Engineers at around Rs 6.30 lakh, DevOps Engineers at around Rs 7.43 lakh and Senior Software Engineers at about Rs 12.58 lakh.

Location can also affect pay. Cognizant has offices and employees in major Indian technology hubs such as Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune and other cities.

Over time, skills can make a difference. Some of the people who develop skills in cloud computing, data engineering, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and software development will get paid positions.

Such a move does not guarantee a huge salary rise, however; staying with a company for several years does not. And those who put in more effort, acquire knowledge and move to higher positions are likely to be rewarded more.

Another important point to note is that salary websites use different methods to collect their data. Glassdoor, Indeed and Levels.fyi may show different figures because they use different samples and reporting methods. That is why salary ranges are more useful than treating one number as the exact Cognizant salary.

Cognizant can be an entry point in the IT industry for freshers. The initial package may not be very high compared with some technology product companies, but employees can use the experience to develop technical and professional skills.

The most important thing is to understand what the offer actually contains. Candidates should know what the fixed salary, variable pay, bonuses, employer contributions and other components of the offer are before they accept one of the offers.

They should also compare the role itself. A slightly lower starting salary can sometimes provide better learning opportunities, while a higher package may come with different responsibilities or conditions.

Cognizant's 2026 salary data shows a clear pattern. Entry-level employees generally work at the lower end of the company’s salary structure, while experienced professionals in specialised and senior positions can earn considerably more.

When it comes to Cognizant jobs, what one should look for is the role, the experience, the complete salary breakdown and not just the average salary.

In the IT industry, the first salary is only one part of the career journey. Skills, experience and career progression can have a much bigger impact on earnings over time.
