A fatal road accident in Kochi, Kerala has raised fresh questions about underage drivers and road safety after a Mercedes-Benz allegedly driven by a 17-year-old boy hit a scooter, killing its rider. Jayabalakrishnan, who was a roadside food seller returning home after a day of work, died.

The accident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, October 25, 2026, in the Cheranalloor area of Kochi. Police have taken the minor into custody and started an investigation into the collision.

The accident took place on Container Road.

The crash occurred at 2:20 a.m. near a Ford showroom on Container Road in Cheranalloor. The Mercedes-Benz hit the scooter from behind as both vehicles were travelling in the same direction, the police chief said.

The impact severely damaged the scooter. Jayabalakrishnan suffered fatal injuries and could not be saved.

Police said the teenager was travelling from Vallarpadam towards Kalamassery. The car was registered in his father's name and had been taken without his parents' knowledge.

According to the first report by Onmanorama, this was based on the teenager’s initial account that rain and waterlogging caused the collision. He reportedly claimed that the scooter rider suddenly changed direction. Witnesses will have to establish the sequence of events based on witness accounts and other evidence.

Police Register Case Against Minor Driver.

Cheranalloor police took the teenager into custody and seized the vehicle. A case was registered under Sections 281 and 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), relating to rash driving on a public way and causing death by negligence.

Police are also examining CCTV footage and questioning witnesses to investigate how the accident occurred. If the investigation finds further offences, further legal action will be taken.

The accused is a minor and the case also raises questions about the legal responsibilities of adults and vehicle owners when an underage person drives a car. Specific provisions and any additional charges will depend on the facts established by investigators.

Family Raises Concerns Following the Accident.

The incident has also attracted attention because the teenager is reportedly the son of a judge. Reports have also carried allegations from the victim’s relatives about the handling of the case and the removal of the car from the accident scene.

These claims have not been independently established as facts and remain matters for investigation. Police are investigating the circumstances of the crash.

The victim's death came less than two weeks after another fatal luxury car accident near Kochi airport on October 11 when a Mini Cooper allegedly driven by a 19-year-old struck a scooter, killing three young people. The two incidents have reignited public debate on dangerous driving and accountability on Kerala’s roads.

Underage Driving and Road Safety in Focus.

There are restrictions on minors driving motor vehicles on public roads in India. The case will likely bring into focus enforcement, supervision, and the responsibilities associated with access to vehicles.

For now, Jayabalakrishnan's death is still under investigation. Police findings, witness accounts, and CCTV footage are expected to give a clear picture of the collision and whether more charges are needed.
