Mysuru Dasara Safety Scare: Illumination Arch Falls on Auto and Car Ahead of Jumboo Savari

Mysuru, October 17: Safety concerns have emerged in Mysuru just four days before the grand Jumboo Savari procession, after an illumination arch collapsed onto an auto-rickshaw and a car on Sayyaji Rao Road on Saturday morning.

There were no injuries in the incident.

The collapse caused panic among motorists and pedestrians on the busy stretch, which is very much a part of the annual Mysuru Dasara celebrations.

Preparations are on in advance for one of the city’s biggest cultural events and the accident raised concern in the community about the safety of temporary decorative structures on the procession route.

According to reports, the illumination arch came crashing down suddenly and landed on vehicles passing along Sayyaji Rao Road. It startled road users and underscored the risk of poorly secured decorative structures in a busy public area.

Though no injuries have been reported, the collapse has raised the alarm on safety check-ups. Many visitors and residents are expected to come a week later for the Jumboo Savari and the roads and infrastructure still need to be safe for all.

Jumboo Savari Route Under Safety Spotlight

Sayyaji Rao Road is the heart of the Jumboo Savari procession, the grand finale of the Mysuru Dasara festival. The procession draws large numbers every year and the decorated elephants, cultural performances and traditional ceremonies sit at the center of the festival.

The timing of the incident is particularly concerning because only four days remain before the procession.

Any damage along the route would pose a serious threat to pedestrians, drivers, visitors and elephants participating in the event.

The latest collapse has led some officials to ask if illumination arches and other temporary structures that were erected along the procession route will be checked. If so, they should be inspecting them and preventing similar events from happening on the day of the procession.

Public safety and event preparations personnel need to ensure that decorative structures are firmly secured and capable of withstanding weather and other external factors. Areas where heavy pedestrian movement will also need to be monitored and protected.

Similar Incident Reported Near Gun House Circle

The latest incident is not the first case of an illumination arch collapsing in Mysuru during the Dasara preparations. A similar incident was reported near Gun House Circle where an illumination arch fell onto a van.

Such incidents have made the city’s decorative installations more unsafe. While the latest collapse was not serious and injuries were not suffered, repeated failures of the structure could be more serious if they occur during peak public movement.

In the face of the Jumboo Savari, residents and road users will be looking to the authorities for timely action.

An inspection of illumination arches and prompt repairs and removal of unsafe structures might curb the risk of further accidents.

The immediate priority is to make sure that the procession route and roads are secure before crowds arrive to celebrate.

The incidents only serve to underscore that public safety should remain at the forefront of the preparations for Mysuru’s largest annual festival.
