The proposed name is Narendra Modi International Airport, Noida-Jewar. The decision marks a significant development for the airport and is expected to make it a major aviation gateway for the National Capital Region and western Uttar Pradesh.

According to reports published on Friday, the state Cabinet passed a resolution in recognition of Modi’s 25 years of continuous service as the head of a government. However, the announcement concerns the approval of a naming proposal, and further formalities may be needed before the change appears across all official records.

UP Cabinet Approves New Airport Name

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced the decision today, speaking to reporters after the Cabinet meeting. He said the Council of Ministers had approved the proposal to rename Noida International Airport as Narendra Modi International Airport, Noida-Jewar.

The chief minister also expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister for the airport project, describing it as an important infrastructure development for Uttar Pradesh.

The announcement comes on the occasion of Modi completing 25 years as the head of government, starting from the time of his first term as Gujarat Chief Minister in October 2001. The naming decision was related to this fact, the state government said.

Where Is Noida International Airport?

Noida International Airport is located in Jewar, in Uttar Pradesh’s Gautam Buddha Nagar district. Despite its name, the airport is located outside Noida city and is designed to serve a wider region across the National Capital Region.

The airport is expected to enhance the travel frequency for Noida, Greater Noida, Ghaziabad, western Uttar Pradesh, and neighbouring destinations. It will also help in making regional economic activity better through air transport and infrastructure development.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Phase I of the airport on March 28, 2026, according to the Press Information Bureau.

Why the Airport Is Important

The airport is a major infrastructure project for Uttar Pradesh and the wider Delhi-NCR region. It is intended to complement Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport and provide additional capacity for passenger and cargo traffic.

Improved airport connectivity can support tourism, trade, logistics, and investment. The project is also expected to create job opportunities during its development and operation.

The Uttar Pradesh government has described the airport as a future aviation hub for the state and the country.

What Happens Next?

Although the Cabinet has endorsed this naming plan, travellers and businesses should continue to monitor official airport and government communications for the implementation timeline.

It will also take a few administrative steps and may need to be updated to the official documents, aviation information, and public-facing signage to formalize the new name as well.

Until those steps are confirmed, the airport may continue to be referred to as Noida International Airport or Jewar Airport in existing records.
