Statue Unveiled at University of Delhi College
The Shyama Prasad Mukherji College (a women's college affiliated to University of Delhi) organised the commemorative programme. The college had already announced about unveiling of statue ahead of time and it would be held at College Plaza and Auditorium.
The installation is a tribute to the leader whose name the school bears; it also gives students and visitors an opportunity to learn about his role in India’s political and educational history.
The presence of Delhi Chief Minister made the occasion more special since it was part of the celebrations for Mookerjee’s 125th birth anniversary.
Who Was Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee?
Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee was born on 6 July 1901 in Calcutta (now Kolkata), West Bengal. He was an educationist, lawyer, parliamentarian and political leader.
He was one of the youngest Vice-Chancellors of Calcutta University and contributed to strengthening higher education. Academic achievements along with interest in public affairs helped him establish himself as a prominent figure in pre-independence India.
After independence, Mookerjee was India's first Minister for Industry and Supply in Jawaharlal Nehru's cabinet but resigned from government in 1950 due to differences over national policies and the Nehru-Liaquat Pact.
Founder of Bharatiya Jana Sangh
In 1951 Mookerjee founded Bharatiya Jana Sangh which later became the ideological predecessor of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
He strongly supported national integration and opposed special constitutional status to Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370. His political campaign formed an important part of his legacy.
Mookerjee died on June 23, 1953 while in custody in Srinagar Jammu and Kashmir. His death is one of the most tragic chapters in India’s political history.
125th Birth Anniversary Commemorations
The unveiling coincides with the nationwide celebrations of Mookerjee’s 125th birth anniversary. The two years (2025-27) provide an opportunity to revisit his contributions in education, governance and national politics.
Educational institutions and public organisations have been organising programmes to remember his life and ideas.
