The North Hills shooting in Los Angeles killed four people and triggered a huge emergency response and a police investigation. A massive emergency response sent shockwaves through the city when local police, firefighters and emergency medical workers rushed to the scene after reports of gunfire.
According to initial information, officers from the Los Angeles Police Department received multiple gunshots in a residential neighbourhood of North Hills. They found four victims of fatal gunshot wounds, and all four were dead at the scene.
The shooting drew a huge police presence, including homicide detectives, tactical officers, crime scene investigators, etc. Streets in the neighbourhood were immediately cordoned off as investigators collected evidence and interviewed witnesses. Helicopters were circling overhead as emergency workers hustled to secure the neighbourhood throughout the night.
There has been no public release of the identities of the victims until family members can know them. The investigation needs to establish the nature of the relationship between the men involved to determine whether the shooting was a domestic dispute, investigators said. Initial accounts indicate that at least some of the victims were residents, but police said no official motive for the shooting was found.
Neighbours said they heard multiple rounds of gunfire in the neighbourhood and a lot of sirens and heavy police activity nearby. Many who lived nearby said they were awakened or forced to remain indoors as officers secured the area and looked for suspects or more evidence.
The detectives are also interviewing the suspect and trying to come to terms with the sequence of events that led to the shooting, investigators said.
It raised concerns again about gun violence in Los Angeles, in which several shootings have still taken place despite the increased police and public safety measures in place. Community leaders and residents were shocked and saddened by the violence and called for more aggressive action to prevent such tragedies in the future.
As news of the shooting spread, social media platforms were flooded with reactions from residents and eyewitnesses who posted videos of the big emergency response. There were multiple police vehicles, ambulances, and fire department units on residential streets, and officers formed a wide security perimeter around the affected area, said one witness.
The LAPD homicide division is asking for any information about the shooting to contact the department. Residents also would be encouraged to avoid the area as the investigation is ongoing, it said.
The North Hills shooting investigation is ongoing, and more details will be forthcoming as detectives work. But for now, the Los Angeles community is traumatised by yet another murder that took four lives in a single act.
