Tensions have been at a catastrophic breaking point between Afghanistan and Pakistan. According to a statement shared Monday morning by the Afghan Ministry of Defense, its Air Force engaged in “precise and coordinated” drone strikes against several important military locations deep inside Pakistan, including the strategic Nur Khan Airbase in Rawalpindi and the headquarters of the 12th Division in Quetta.
The Attack on Nur Khan Airbase
Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said the strike on Nur Khan, which is home to an essential Pakistan Air Force (PAF) wing, was a retaliation for Pakistani air raids on Kabul and Bagram last weekend. Although the Afghan authorities said the strikes left “significant damage,” Pakistan has not formally confirmed at the Rawalpindi facility the level of destruction.
The Nur Khan Airbase has been singled out as one of the flashpoints of regional tension where India launched in May 2025 when it struck a ground force in "Operation Sindoor."
Pakistan’s ‘Operation Ghazab Lil Haq’
The Afghan strikes are part of a bigger wave of violence unleashed by Pakistan’s “Operation Ghazab Lil Haq” (Righteous Fury). Islamabad announced the operation on Feb. 27, 2026 as a “decisive effort to eliminate terrorist sanctuaries” along the 2,600 km-long Durand Line.
Pakistan's Information Minister, Attaullah Tarar, stated that the military has killed more than 415 Afghan personnel and destroyed 182 checkposts since the operation has started. He justified the offensive as a countermeasure to unprovoked Taliban attacks on 53 posts along the border.
Casualties and Combat Summary
This conflict has inflicted appalling losses for both countries within 96 hours of escalation of fighting.
A Region on the Brink
The statement, from Pakistan’s Defense Ministry, of “open war” transforms the relations between the two neighbors. And now that both sides have embraced sophisticated drone technology and long-range strikes, the battle has gone much further than mere border skirmishes.
International observers have been paying increasing monitoring and analysis as the rising violence threatens to further destabilize South Asia in synchrony with seismic geopolitical disruptions across the Middle East.
Travel Advisory & Security Notice
The Durand Line shut down all trade and transit. Travelers in border areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan should seek out immediate shelter, it’s anticipated that aerial exchanges will continue through the night.
