According to the official medical examiner’s report, Chase died from AIDS-related complications. She was 35 years old at the time of her death and died at a Los Angeles hospital on June 16, 2014.

In other words, these findings have helped to put an end to weeks of speculation over the actress’s death and have renewed dialogue about HIV/AIDS awareness, early diagnosis, and access to medical care.

Official Medical Report

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's Office said AIDS was the main cause of death. The report also listed chronic polysubstance use under the category of “other significant conditions,” likely contributing to her overall health condition but not as the cause of death.

According to medical experts, AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome) is the late stage of HIV infection, when the immune system is severely compromised, and the disease progresses. That leaves the patient susceptible to life-threatening infections and chronic illnesses if left untreated.

The medical examiner’s findings will complete the investigation into the actress’s death.

A Memorable Hollywood Career

Daveigh Chase became one of Hollywood’s most recognizable child performers in the early 2000s.

Her first major role was Samara Morgan, the evil ghost girl in The Ring in 2002. And it’s hard to forget that one of the most chilling parts of the movie is the first time Samara appears on the TV screen.

The film was a commercial and critical success and established Chase as one of the industry’s most promising young talents.

In the same year, Chase voiced Lilo Pelekai in Disney’s animated hit Lilo & Stitch. Her heartfelt performance as the lonely Hawaiian girl won her fans worldwide and is one of Disney’s most beloved voice performances.

She even performed the role in television spin-offs and other projects to cement her place in animation history.

Besides ‘The Ring’ and ‘Lilo & Stitch’

Chase has since appeared in television series and films, while being versatile in the genre from horror to animation.

Her acting credits include Big Love, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Without a Trace, Cold Case, ER, and more. She also voiced animated productions and video games and displayed her abilities both as an actress and voice actor.

Chase, although successful early on, began to stray away from mainstream Hollywood in later years and only appeared in a few independent productions.

Renewed Awareness About HIV/AIDS

The discovery that AIDS-related complications caused Chase’s death has increased awareness about HIV/AIDS.

Medical professionals stress that significant advances in treatment have turned HIV from a fatal disease into a manageable chronic condition for many people. Early diagnosis and regular antiretroviral therapy (ART) for people living with HIV can often keep them living long, healthy lives.

Healthcare professionals continue to encourage routine testing, early treatment, and campaigns to reduce the stigma associated with HIV/AIDS. Education and access to healthcare are at the forefront of preventing advanced-stage disease, and public health organizations stress that education and access to healthcare are key.

Fans Pay Tribute

Following the release of the medical examiner's report, fans from all over the world took to social media to remember Chase's contributions to film and television.

Many scenes from The Ring and Lilo & Stitch were interspersed with her performances that cemented children’s memories and touched people in general.

Tributes honed in on her ability to play such a tender emotional role and such a horrifying horror role at a young age.

Several entertainment industry personalities also expressed condolences. Chase is a great actress, and her work still resonates with so many people even more than 20 years after her first big hits.

A Lasting Legacy

Though her life ended tragically at 35, Daveigh Chase leaves behind a body of work that is still at the forefront of horror movies and animated storytelling.

Her portrayal of Samara Morgan is one of the most iconic examples of supernatural horror, and her voice as Lilo is still very much a part of Disney fans’ hearts all over the world.

The official medical findings bring closure to her death and also serve as a marker for people who need to know about health, for medical care, and for people who suffer from serious illnesses.
