A disturbing case of alleged domestic violence has sparked world awareness and renewed debate about women’s safety and the legal protections and the need for better enforcement of protections against gender-based violence. The woman reportedly endured extreme levels of physical and psychological abuse at home, reports that were reported on social platforms. Her being held down and even humiliated in a degrading way angered people watching the video and reports on the incident.
In one, a woman was supposedly humiliated and verbally abused and had water poured on her in a manner where the woman was insulted, reflecting how severe the mistreatment at the time was.

These troubling charges reflect if true gross violations of human dignity and fundamental human rights. While details of these allegations are not independently verified, both the viral nature of the allegations as well as the response to it has led to vigorous online activism for immediate, speedy investigation and draconian legal measures against perpetrators of domestic violence. Domestic abuse is a global phenomenon, experts say, and it is not confined to any region, religion or class, but it is prevalent across the globe it cuts across regions, religions and socioeconomic backgrounds.
It usually happens behind closed doors so this is likely a huge chunk of the time and it’s difficult to register and intervene. Victims often endure in silence and fear, pressured by society and without a system of support and no one with whom they can talk.
India and other countries (plus the United States) have strict laws prohibiting domestic violence, abuse and cruelty that takes place in intimate relationships. But social stigma, ignorance and mechanisms of enforcement are all hurdles that keep many victims from obtaining justice, activists said. Women’s advocates have pressed on, calling for education, awareness-raising, and accessible support services, including helplines and shelters.
Crowds are also encouraged to hold societies accountable they should comprehend, and report, harassment, rather than turn their heads. This case should serve as a lesson to all of us that any violence of any kind is unjustifiable and calls for the law, education and the existence of support. The fight for human dignity and for protecting people in a safe, comfortable environment at home is one we all have as participants of this planet!
