As the Islamic world looks past the recent Eid al-Fitr celebrations, astronomical experts have already begun predicting when the "Big Eid" will take place. According to Ibrahim Al Jarwan, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Emirates Astronomy Society, Eid Al Adha 2026 will begin on May 27.
The Lunar Countdown
The Islamic calendar is based on the lunar cycle, and the month of Dhul Hijjah, the 12th and final month, is key to the festival's timing. Based on current astronomical calculations:
- Dhul Hijjah 1447 AH is likely to begin on Monday, May 18, 2026.
- Arafat Day, which falls on the 9th of Dhul Hijjah and marks the pinnacle of the Hajj pilgrimage, is expected to occur on Tuesday, May 26.
- Eid Al Adha (10th of Dhul Hijjah) will fall on Wednesday, May 27.
Although the dates are based on accurate scientific models, the final confirmation will depend on the official moon-sighting committees in Saudi Arabia and the UAE as the dates approach.
Six-day Holiday for UAE Residents?
The predicted dates suggest a significant mid-year break for both public and private sector employees. If Arafat Day falls on a Tuesday (May 26) and the three days of Eid follow from Wednesday to Friday (May 27-29), the combination with the subsequent Saturday-Sunday weekend would result in a continuous six-day break.
This potential “super-break” is already driving a surge in travel interest, and residents are already dreaming of foreign getaways and staycations. Travel experts suggest booking flights early because the prices will go up once the moon is confirmed.
Significance of the Festival
Eid Al Adha is also known as the Festival of Sacrifice and is dedicated to Prophet Ibrahim’s (AS) unyielding dedication and willingness to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God. The festival is marked by:
- Qurbani: The ritual sacrifice of a sheep, goat, or cow, with the meat distributed among family, friends, and the less fortunate.
- Hajj Completion: The holiday will coincide with the last stages of the annual pilgrimage to Makkah.
- Charity: Zakat is very much on the table and helping those in need to make sure that the whole community is celebrating.
Regional Variations
Although Gulf states like Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, and Kuwait generally observe the same sighting, countries like India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh celebrate the festival one day later depending on the local crescent. Eid Al Adha 2026 is tentatively expected on Thursday, May 28.
