India’s digital payment ecosystem in a big way made a new step forward as the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has been integrated with the Maldives’ national payment system Favara.
This will make cross-border digital payments easier, faster and more secure for tourists, businesses and residents of both countries.
The integration is another step in India’s drive to expand its digital public infrastructure globally. UPI has been developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and is one of the world’s best real-time payment platforms with billions of transactions processed every month.
With this collaboration, Indian travelers visiting the Maldives will eventually be able to make payments using UPI-enabled applications at participating merchants.
And it will also improve the financial linkages between the two neighboring countries and promote tourism, trade and business.
The Maldives is one of the top destinations for Indian tourists abroad and thousands of Indians visit each year to travel, visit businesses and leisure resorts. The introduction of UPI connectivity will eliminate the need for high-cost cash or using foreign cards for daily transactions.
The integration has been hailed by officials from both countries as a step forward in bilateral cooperation in digital financial services. India's push for digital payments to be promoted in international markets is in line with India’s broader aim of modernizing the payment infrastructure in partner countries.
UPI has already expanded to a number of countries such as Singapore, France, Sri Lanka, UAE, Bhutan, Nepal, Mauritius, etc. and elsewhere through various partnerships.
The addition of the Maldives further strengthens India’s position as a leader in digital payment innovation and is a key player in digital payment technology.
Favara is the Maldives’ domestic payment system and is for the purpose of facilitating safe and efficient digital transactions across the country. With UPI, users will have quicker settlements, better security of payments and the convenience to do so.
For the tourism sector, industry experts in the Maldivian economy believe that the partnership will have the potential to see more digital transactions in the tourism sector as it is the backbone of the economy. Hotels, restaurants, retail shops and local businesses will benefit from easier payment acceptance for Indian visitors.
The integration is also evidence of India and the Maldives’ growing digital cooperation. Both countries have also been working together on technology, connectivity, infrastructure development and economic development opportunities to enhance bilateral ties in addition to payments.
As Indian UPI has gained global recognition, other countries are looking to partner with India to take advantage of its efficient and low-cost payment mechanism. The successful integration with Favara shows how digital payment systems can make cross-border financial inclusion more accessible and international travel and commerce easier.
The collaboration will foster the future in cross-border digital payments and will also strengthen India’s position at the forefront of the future of global fintech.
