New Video Captures Iran’s Attack on Major US Base in Kuwait

New video footage has shed light on the damage done by Iranian attacks on Camp Buehring, a key US military base in Kuwait. Explosive explosions, drone strikes and damage to structures and military equipment during the early phase of the conflict can be seen in the footage, which CBS News has obtained.

Camp Buehring (CBKU) is located about 25 miles from Kuwait’s border with Iraq. The installation has been used for more than two decades as a staging and training site for US troops operating in the Middle East.

The new footage was taken at the base during the attacks and shows the impact of Iranian weapons on the facility. CBS News said the videos were authenticated by embedded metadata and by comparing the details visible in the footage with photographs documenting the damage.

The American troops at Camp Buehring also faced ballistic missiles and drones, three US service members told CBS News separately. Iranian F-5 fighter jets also flew close to the installation during the attacks, they said.

As the strikes continued, troops had to find shelter in bunkers. One service member said, “CBKU got demolished,” to describe the base’s damage.

The attacks came days after a large portion of the US troops who served on Camp Buehring had already been moved. Some 7,000 US troops had been attached to the installation; the Pentagon had begun moving personnel from fixed positions that were vulnerable to attack. There were more than 100 people on the base when the strikes took place.

The attacks also created logistical problems for the remaining US forces. Army logistics officials were worried about supplies such as .50-caliber ammunition and Patriot missile interceptors, CBS reported.

With Camp Buehring coming under attack at a number of times, US troops eventually evacuated, moving to more isolated locations in Kuwait’s Udari Desert. Equipment and supplies were carried along with soldiers as they traveled at night to new forward operations locations.

The move was to keep the troops away from more attacks and safer places away from the heavily targeted base. The footage released here gives us a taste of the life of American personnel during those attacks.

In Camp Buehring, no U.S. service members were killed by enemy fire, CBS News reported or in the desert locations where troops later deployed. But most of them were injured, they said, during the deployment. Two soldiers were struck by lightning in a sandstorm in the desert, they said.

The footage has increased awareness amongst Americans of the risks of military personnel who are stationed at fixed bases throughout the Middle East. That missile and drone attacks can have a huge impact on military infrastructure and troop movement is also shown.

Camp Buehring videos provide a visual picture of the destruction at the Kuwaiti base and show why US forces eventually moved away from the installation as Iranian attacks continued.
