Lori Chavez-DeRemer Resigns as Trump’s Labor Secretary

U.S. Labour Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer has resigned in a key decision by the Donald Trump administration and left an unanticipated vacancy in one of the most senior cabinet positions in his administration.

Chavez-DeRemer left her post, and the White House said it did not release official reasons, but the departure might stem from some policy dispute or mounting political pressure, some contacts with the administration said. But no official statements have appeared on those claims.

Chavez-DeRemer was a congressional member before taking office, and she had introduced labour policies on labour issues such as job creation and improving the employer-employee relationship during that transition. And over the last decade, she tried to overhaul labour requirements and solve age-old questions about wages and working conditions.

Chavez-DeRemer thanked the lawmakers for giving her a chance to serve and said she was thankful that she got to serve, after a short statement noting that she is a strong advocate for American workers. “It has been an honour to lead the Department of Labour and champion policies that benefit many hardworking families across the country,” she said.

President Trump commended her on the job for the effort and her role in executing the administration’s labour agenda. He announced later that an interim successor would presumably succeed, at least for the near term. At a high moment in history, in which economic woes continue, labour shortages are widespread throughout a swath of industries, and workplace safeguards are under fire, the exit from this role is almost inevitable.

And all of these are at the Department of Labour, so continuity in leadership is required: With turnover so rapid, there’s a real chance that continuing labour activity is hampered, and even the President’s overall policy direction will be impacted by such a circumstance, say political analysts. Now, the main question is who will be nominated as the next Secretary of Labour and how this transitional leadership will change the course of policy moving forward.
