Something that had been supposed to be a celebration of culture and of nature became extremely traumatic when on Sunday, the new Miss Universe, Fatima Bosch Fernandez, collapsed before thousands of onlookers. It occurred while at her eagerly anticipated appearance at the Ambato Fruit and Flower Festival, one of Ecuador’s largest annual events.
A Sudden Turn of Events
Witnesses said that the Mexican-born beauty queen was standing on a floral float; waved in a flamboyance full of charm and smacked kisses everywhere as enthusiastic masses crowded in the way. But the lighthearted energy dropped all of that when Fernández looked confused. A few moments later she went on her knees and collapsed on the platform. Security and event personnel immediately responded, shielding her from public view as they demanded medical attention.
Paramedics arrived on scene shortly afterwards for emergency assessment. Saw in wonder as the crowd watched, Fernández was carefully diverted away from the route of the festival to a nearby medical center. At that time, organizers confirmed, she was relieved of all official duties for the remainder of the festival so that she could deal with her recovery and a whole series of extensive medical tests.
While the exact cause of the fainting has not been pinned down, local reports suggest a few different things might be at play:
- Topography: Ambato is about 2,500 meters (8,200 feet) high, making it dizzy or potentially “altitude sickness” for people who are not used to the climate.
- Heat and dehydration: The searing midday sun and heavy official regalia can frequently lead to heat exhaustion for long parades.
- Exhaustion: Fernández has been traveling a lot on a heavy workload from the moment she took the title.

Statements and Next Steps
Miss Universe Organization on Sunday evening issued a brief statement that said that Fátima is “stable and resting.” They issued a statement thanking Ambato residents for their rapid response and massive support and declaring her health at the top of their list. Because Fátima Bosch Fernández is still under constant watch to ensure no underlying conditions, she did not post anything to her social accounts.
Supporters from Mexico and elsewhere have flooded the Miss Universe official pages with well wishes and hashtagged #PrayForFatima to show their solidarity. The Fruit and Flower Festival continued to run programming, but the guest of honour was greatly missing from attendees’ experiences.
