Eastern Railway to Introduce 14 New Local Trains in West Bengal from July 6

In a major relief for thousands of daily commuters, from July 6, 2026 onwards, the Sealdah Division of Eastern Railway will introduce 14 new suburban local train services to relieve the chronic congestion and overcrowding in some of West Bengal's busiest railway corridors. Those additional services will help the growing passenger demand, especially during peak office and school hours.

The decision will benefit lakhs of commuters who rely on Kolkata’s suburban rail network to transit through the city's suburban train network to work all day long for their daily travel. The new services will run on six main suburban lines, with a new timetable and more options for travel throughout the day.

Why are new trains being introduced?

Eastern Railway has announced the additional services to:

  • Reduce congestion in the peak commuting hours.
  • Better connect the suburban cities with Kolkata and Kolkata on the road networks.
  • Provide more frequent services on high-demand routes.
  • Increase passenger convenience across the Sealdah suburban network to increase the comfort of passengers.

The 14 new local trains will run on the following suburban sections under the Sealdah Division:

Sealdah – Ranaghat
Sealdah – Bongaon
Sealdah – Barasat
Sealdah – Hasnabad
Sealdah – Dankuni
Sealdah – Naihati/Kalyani corridor (as per the revised suburban schedule).

The additional services will improve the connectivity for office-goers, students, traders, and other frequent passengers traveling on those busy routes.

Operational Changes

Apart from introducing new trains, Eastern Railway is also planning changes to Circular Railway services. The aim is to improve platform usage at Kolkata Railway Station to improve the long-distance trains and suburban operations within the station.

The revised schedule will help to improve punctuality and speed train movements across the network, officials said.

Relief for Daily Commuters

The Sealdah suburban railway network is one of the busiest in India and has millions of passengers a day. During rush hours, trains are usually full to capacity, and the daily journey is difficult.

The addition of 14 new local trains is expected to:

  • Reduce passenger crowding.
  • Improve travel comfort.
  • Shorten waiting times between trains.
  • Strengthen last-mile connectivity for suburban commuters.
  • Effective Date

The new suburban train services will be launched on July 6, 2026. Passengers should look at the updated timetable with official Eastern Railway announcements, station notice boards, or railway enquiry services before starting their journey. Departure times and stopping times will depend on the route.

The expansion fits the Eastern Railway's longer-term agenda in expanding suburban rail services and the commuting experience for millions of passengers around the state of West Bengal.
