Light rainfall in Arunachal Pradesh has led to torrential rain in Arunachal Pradesh to trigger devastating flash floods and landslides, with neighboring Assam on high alert for a major rise in river levels across several districts over the next 48 hours.
The torrential rains in Arunachal Pradesh’s Lower Subansiri district triggered a sudden surge in water discharge that caused flash floods, damage to infrastructure and widespread disruption in the area, officials said.
Assam Braces for Flood Wave
According to the Regional Meteorological Centre in Guwahati and the Meteorological Centre in Itanagar, Yazali in Lower Subansiri district received almost 73 mm of rainfall in 24 hours, and the heaviest downpour was on Tuesday.
Satellite and radar data shows extremely intense rainfall between 6 am and 7:30 a.m. and flash floods and a rapid increase in river discharge in the upper catchment areas.
The flood wave will affect Assam districts like Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Biswanath and Sonitpur first, then downstream towards other districts and Dhubri, officials said.
The top officials of the district administration are advised by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to stay on high alert and put all emergency plans in place.
The SDRF, NDRF and disaster response agencies have been prepared and ready, and residents in vulnerable and low-lying flood-prone areas have been advised to be vigilant and move to safer areas.
Flash Floods Cause Damage in Arunachal Pradesh
The worst-hit areas are near the Panyor Lower Hydroelectric Project, formerly known as Ranganadi Hydroelectric Project. At the time of the sudden rise in inflows, authorities opened a spillway gate to release excess water.
News from Yazali also shows that flash floods that carried mud, debris and rocks destroyed homes and local infrastructure.
The situation was worse in the Keyi Panyor district where heavy rainfall triggered a landslide and flash flood near the NEEPCO area. Large amounts of debris buried parts of road, disrupting connectivity and making travel nearly impossible.
According to Deputy Commissioner Sweta Nagorkoti, there are three people currently missing and 18 houses in NEEPCO Colony have been washed away.
The local helipad has also been damaged, preventing Army and Indian Air Force helicopters from landing for rescue operations. Search and rescue efforts are now being carried out by SDRF and NDRF personnel on the ground.

Landslides Hit Key Highway in Assam
In Assam's Dibrugarh district, continuous rainfall has also caused major landslides along National Highway 315(A).
The highway connecting Jeypore to Arunachal Pradesh’s Deomali and Khonsa areas has suffered extensive damage after large parts of the hillside road collapsed into a gorge. There are three major landslide sites near the Kathalguri Beat Office under the Jeypore Forest Range.
The route passes through the ecologically sensitive Dihing Patkai National Park and had only been widened, and reconstruction work had begun in the last year. But new landslides have now made the road dangerously narrow and vulnerable.
Authorities have imposed a night traffic ban on the affected area from 6 pm to 6 am as a precautionary measure.
Authorities Monitor Evolving Situation
With monsoon rains in northeast India still going on, officials are worried the situation will get worse in the next few days. Emergency agencies are on standby, and people are being told to avoid flooded areas and to avoid going to the Brahmaputra and other rivers and not to go in small boats across the Brahmaputra and other rivers where water currents will be stronger.
As rescue teams continue working and river levels rise, authorities are closely monitoring the situation to prevent further loss of life and infrastructure damage across the region.
