Ayodhya: A vigilant security guard played a crucial role in exposing the alleged theft of donation money from the Ayodhya Ram Temple, and the police quickly recovered a huge amount of cash from the Ayodhya Ram Temple.
The whole incident came to light when a security guard discovered ₹40,000 in cash in a toilet inside the temple premises, as per reports. Instead of ignoring it, he immediately informed the temple authorities, triggering an internal alert and a detailed inquiry.
The unexpected recovery of the cash raised suspicion among the temple administration, prompting officials to verify the temple's donation collections and security arrangements. During the initial verification, it was suspected that a lot of money from the temple's donation boxes (hundi) had gone missing.
As soon as the complaint was received, police launched an investigation into the theft. Quickly, the missing funds were traced and recovered by investigating officials—about ₹80 lakh in 17 hours after the case was reported.
The rapid recovery was owing to the quick actions of the temple administration and police, and to the alertness of the security guard whose timely information was the turning point in the investigation.
Investigators are also examining how the alleged theft took place and whether it involved people working in the temple’s security and donation collection process. Police are also checking CCTV footage, interviewing people in the temple, and gathering evidence to determine the exact sequence of events.
All of this has galvanized debate about security for large religious institutions that get millions of cash donations every day. Regular audits, better surveillance, and better control of the donation processes, if done properly, can prevent future incidents, experts say.
The Ram Temple in Ayodhya attracts lakhs of devotees from across India, and a considerable part of the daily income of devotees is donated to it. As public donations are so large, authorities will have to tighten security procedures to protect the donations of devotees.
The security guard has been appreciated from many quarters, in part because his honesty and quick reporting of the recovered cash may have revealed the larger theft before more money was lost.
