The Hennur Underpass in Bengaluru is in a very bad condition, and the problem with it has now caught commuters’ minds; iron rods that were found on the road, damaged drainage grills and exposed iron rods have been reported.
The underpass, which receives traffic constantly throughout the day, is now at grave risk of damage due to the broken drainage covers. Iron bars that were originally part of the drainage system have been broken or have been completely displaced, leaving hazardous gaps on the road surface.
Even with the danger of an accident, the vehicles still cross the damaged underpass. Motorists, like two-wheeler riders, slow down and navigate their vehicles over the exposed iron rods to avoid losing control. During peak traffic hours, long queues have been reported as commuters reduce their speed while crossing the damaged stretch.
It’s pretty grave for bikers and scooter riders, too, if they lose their balance or take a sudden effort to avoid the exposed metal bars. The danger at night or in rainy situations is even greater because the damaged parts may not be clearly visible to road users.
Residents and regular commuters have voiced their frustration about the poor maintenance of the underpass. Many have wondered why the damaged drainage grills have not yet been repaired despite the obvious threat they pose to public safety. They fear that unless immediate action is taken, the damaged infrastructure could lead to a major accident.
Residents have called on civic authorities to inspect the underpass without delay and replace broken drainage grills. Temporary warning signs, barricades, and reflective markers should also be placed at the site to warn drivers of the dangers of the area and to make them aware of the site, they say.
Damage to drainage covers and exposed iron rods are some of the most dangerous road defects, especially on busy urban roads where vehicles travel at moderate to high speeds. Even a small impact can cause two-wheelers to skid or damage tyres for four-wheelers.
Citizens have appealed to the concerned authorities such as the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to ensure that repairs and the smooth functioning of essential road infrastructure are prioritized and that maintenance is a priority. Early action, they say, will enhance the safety of residents and will not only protect everybody from accidents and traffic incidents, but also avoid unnecessary accidents and traffic jams, they say.
As long as the Hennur Underpass is unrepaired, we recommend that drivers be very careful in the Hennur Underpass, keep to a minimum when driving there, slow down near the damaged section, and stay on their guard.
