Bengaluru's much-awaited Pink Line Metro project has received approval from the Railway Board and is now on track to become operational and be completed. The approval also covers the deployment of new BEML-manufactured Metro trains for the project.
After the Railway Board's approval, the approval documents will be submitted to the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) and the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS). It is part of the last steps required before passenger services can start on the new corridor.
The Pink Line is one of the major upcoming Metro projects in Bengaluru and will be able to drive up connectivity in most of the city’s core.
Bengaluru Pink Line: 21.26-km Metro Corridor
The Pink Line will run between Kalena Agrahara and Nagawara, covering around 21.26 kilometres.
The corridor is being developed to provide more east-west connectivity in Bengaluru and connect several residential, commercial and transport hubs. When it is fully functional, it will provide commuters with an alternative public transport option and improve the connectivity to areas of the city that currently depend on road-based transport.
The project has been conceived as a significant addition to Bengaluru’s Metro network and is being executed in phases.
Construction Being Completed In Two Phases
The Pink Line project is being implemented in two phases, and construction is taking place in different parts of the corridor.
Now that the Railway Board has given them approval, the work can focus on completing all the other things needed to open the line for passenger use.
The approval is particularly important because Metro infrastructure and rolling stock have to undergo various technical and safety-related procedures before commercial operations can begin.
New BEML Metro Trains Get Approval
Along with the Pink Line project, approval has also been granted for the new BEML Metro trains planned for the corridor.
BEML, a major manufacturing facility in Bengaluru, is involved in producing Metro coaches for the city’s expanding rail network. New trains will be available and approved to allow the Pink Line to be used on time in the future.
The trains will have to pass the testing, inspection, and certification steps before they will be ready for commercial operation.
Approval Documents To Be Submitted To BMRCL And CMRS
After the Railway Board's approval, the relevant documents will be submitted to BMRCL and CMRS.
The CMRS plays a key role in the safety certification process for Metro rail systems. Before a new Metro corridor is opened to passengers, the required inspections and safety clearances must be completed.
The approval documents will thus make way for the next stage of the commissioning process.
Pink Line is expected to enhance Bengaluru Connectivity
The Pink Line is expected to form an important part of Bengaluru’s growing Metro network. The corridor will serve several densely populated areas and will be connected to the existing and planned transport infrastructure.
Great Metro connectivity would provide commuters with an alternative to private vehicles and buses, particularly along busy parts of the city.
The project would also support Bengaluru in its broader efforts to expand mass rapid transit infrastructure as the city's population and daily travel demand continue to increase.
Final Process Before Passenger Services
While the Railway Board approval is a major step, passenger service will depend on all of the other statutory, technical and safety procedures being completed.
The next stages should be document submission, inspections, testing and the necessary safety certification. If the relevant approvals are completed, then the corridor could proceed to commercial operations.
With the Railway Board’s approval for both the Pink Line and the new BEML Metro trains, expectations are now high that work related to commissioning will move forward more quickly.
