Bharat Bandh 12 Feb: Will Schools, Colleges Remain Closed Tomorrow?

More than 600 districts will likely be affected by the 24-hour strike by 10 central trade unions and the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM). Basic services remain exempt, but the educational sector is in a “wait-and-watch” situation.

State-Wise Breakdown of School Closures

  • Kerala: Likely Closed. So as long as the ruling LDF backs the strike and student/teacher unions agree to join in, Kerala’s principal schools and colleges are likely to remain closed.
  • Karnataka: Variable. Although not an official, state-wide holiday was declared in the meantime, institutions in cities like Bengaluru (as well as Hubballi) could be closed if public transport (BMTC/KSRTC) is severely disrupted.
  • Odisha: High Probability of Closure. A pending near-total shutdown, according to reports, in many districts with local officials likely to declare that they will be shutting down by this evening to protect student safety.
  • Other States: Schools are now in many places planned to keep going but attendance is expected to be constrained by transportation issues.

Role of Transport Disruptions

Even if a school is open in name, the strike may compel closures, due to:

  • Bus Strikes: Most school bus drivers are members of participating transport unions.
  • Road Blockades: Protesters have set up "Chakka Jams" (road blockades) in many cities, which have already made it hard for private vans and parents to reach campuses.
  • Safety Concerns: Some private school managements believe they want to declare a precautionary holiday, as there are protest rallies in place, and doing so would avoid getting caught in any protest rallies.

The Official Advice

At present, the Department of School Education and Literacy has not issued a national advisory.

Important Note: Students and parents should be on the lookout for official messages or messages from school/college administrations on WhatsApp by 8 pm tonight.
