The protests clogged a lot of the travel in various towns, and party sympathisers and angry people called for immediate arrests as well as an investigation into the matter.

BJP Workers Stage Road Blockade

Hundreds of BJP party operatives and supporters are believed to have gathered on main roads in West Medinipur with news of Rath’s murder spreading quickly. Protesters backed up the roads, chanting slogans against the state government and accusing officials of not keeping political carnage in the province at bay.

Nearby, in the hours following the protest, lines of stalled cars lined the neighbourhood streets, as agitators demanded justice for Chandranath Rath. Workers at the same party called the killing a 'targeted political attack' and said that in the state, opposition voices were under ever-increasing attack.

Political Shock: killing Chandranath Rath

Chandranath Rath was shot dead under suspicious circumstances and is reported to be Suvendu Adhikari's close aide; his murder has enraged some BJP supporters. According to reports, it was not clear what his killers' motive was. Police are investigating the murder, but not yet the motive for the killing.

And the atmosphere of political violence still foments the kind of violence we witnessed in West Bengal: In West Bengal, there were incessant incidents of political violence between other political factions that are often not of the type that occur whenever political parties clash with one another.

Suvendu Adhikari Condemns Incident

Suvendu Adhikari condemned the killing and called for the perpetrators of the killing to pay the price right away. BJP leaders, however, said the ruling elite had neglected the safety of opposition employees and supporters. The killing epitomised the state’s law and order woes, many leaders of the BJP said, and requested that central agencies intervene if necessary.

Police Deployment Increased

The police were heavily posted in sensitive areas to reacquaint traffic with the protests and deter them from escalating. Officials attempted to send protesters off blocked highways, but security was tight around the protest sites. Authorities were calling for calm, and said the investigation into Rath’s death would be followed through.

Debate Regarding Political Violence Escalates

The episode merely reignited debate on new issues of political violence in West Bengal and is sure to escalate with a few major political events and elections. Opposition parties have accused government officials of refraining from stopping attacks on political workers several times, as ruling party leaders repeatedly write them off as a question of personal political grudges. The assassination of a senior opposition leader’s close aide has compounded a bitter fight in the state.

Public Disruption and Fear

The toll on commuters and public transport services was heavy as road stops were lifted. The residents fear for an atmosphere of increasing political unrest and bloodshed, which is likely to be aggravated in the coming days.

Investigation Continues

Local rivalries, politics, political pressure and other local stuff are the things that the police are targeting, and now they are hunting things down from every end. Investigators will also be looking at video footage of the attack, witness statements and forensic evidence to see whether the suspect had anything to do with the killing.

Meanwhile, BJP lawmakers have warned, “if the perpetrators are not caught soon enough, there will be more protests to sweep the state.”
