A police investigation of a disturbing incident on a Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) bus in Chennai has drawn attention after a video of a young woman allegedly under the influence of alcohol creating a ruckus during the journey was posted on social media.
The bus was on its way to Kilambakkam and she was allegedly arguing with people and physically confronting at least two people at a point in time when the situation turned nasty.
According to reports about the incident, the woman was heard to have been at the centre of the bus and got into verbal battles with other passengers during the journey and had many arguments with others on board. Video of the episode showed her sitting on the raised dashboard area at the front of the bus, close to the windshield, while other passengers in the bus tried to calm her down, and some of them tried to talk to her.
The woman was heard during the confrontation wondering why she would travel by bus and saying that she usually goes by cab. Members of her audience seem to have tried to de-escalate the situation and asked her to provide her phone number or contact details of someone who could be reached on her behalf. She reportedly refused to share such information.
The situation was tense as passengers attempted to understand what went wrong. When one person asked if her behaviour was acceptable, the woman said she thought so. A male passenger could be heard saying she appeared drunk, and that she didn’t get a ticket for the journey.
A male passenger in one of the seats tried to speak to the woman and she suddenly appeared aggressive and hit him on the head, the video and reports say. A number of passengers quickly intervened after the alleged assault and surrounded the woman and tried to stop the situation from getting worse.
The incident continued with another female passenger wearing a saree. The two women had a heated verbal exchange before the physical exchange happened. The woman at the center of the incident allegedly grabbed the other passenger's hair and pulled it, with a lot of commotion in the moving bus.
So a person who disputes with others can get into physical violence on public transport, when the vehicle is filled with more than one person. Bus drivers and conductors have to balance controlling the vehicle with ensuring the safety of all passengers on board.
The bus driver and conductor stopped the bus and the woman was removed from the bus as a result of the disturbance, and the driver and conductor went to the Kumaran Nagar Police about it. Police are now investigating the woman's identity and the circumstances that led to the confrontation.
The incident has also attracted attention because of the video circulating on social media. Videos made by passengers or witnesses can quickly be posted online, and often create a big reaction before investigators have time to investigate. In this case, the circulating footage provides a glimpse of the confrontation, but the real context in which it took place and the facts that you would have to verify before recording is possible would have to be established through an investigation.
The allegations of alcohol consumption, refusal to take a ticket and the assaults can therefore be understood as claims based on the reported incident and video footage until independently established by authorities. Being seen on a viral video or a police investigation does not prove criminal liability.
The episode has once again reminded public transport operators of the difficulties faced by operators when passengers are disruptive or aggressive. MTC buses carry thousands of commuters around Chennai and surrounding cities every day so passenger safety and orderly conduct are one of the most critical aspects of daily public transportation.
A girl is creating a scene on an MTC bus in Ashok Nagar, Chennai while drunk. But imagine if a guy had done the same thing… Same mistake, but would the reaction really be the same? https://t.co/cPSFpFHuJ1

Police will examine the video footage available, talk to passengers and transport staff and establish the sequence of events. If any complaint or case is registered, further legal action would follow depending on the outcome of the investigation and the law at hand.
For the moment, the viral video has brought the Chennai MTC bus incident into the spotlight and Kumaran Nagar Police are investigating the woman’s identity and the reasons behind the alleged assaults and disturbance.
