New Delhi government’s new EV Policy 2026 has been implemented and the change for electric vehicle buyers is huge. Unlike in the past, subsidies won’t be paid out automatically after vehicle registration, and instead buyers apply through a dedicated online portal within 30 days of the vehicle’s Registration Certificate (RC) being generated to get the financial incentives.
PTI added that the government is developing a single-window online portal for subsidy application and disbursement of all eligible electric vehicles. Missing the 30-day application deadline would mean that buyers would be permanently denied the subsidy and so timely application is critical.
30-day deadline starts after RC generation
The countdown begins as soon as an EV's Registration Certificate is issued. Buyers will have exactly 30 days to submit their application through the official portal.
The deadline applies to all eligible vehicle types: electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers and electric cars. Once there is no time for waiting to get a car, the application will be rejected, and it will be refused, officials said.
The Delhi EV Policy 2026 will provide subsidies for vehicles.
For buyers who are eligible for financial incentives under the new policy, they can claim financial incentives such as:
Up to Rs 30,000 subsidy for eligible electric two-wheelers. Up to Rs 50,000 subsidy for eligible electric three-wheelers. 100% waiver of road tax and registration charges for electric cars priced below Rs 30 lakh.
The new portal will replace the more traditional process where dealers or Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) were used to apply for a vehicle with a lower price, so that buyers can apply directly at the retail level.
Documents Likely Required
In order to receive the subsidy applicants need to present their identity, residency and vehicle ownership.
The expected documents include:
Aadhaar Card, Voter ID or a recent electricity, water or gas bill as proof of Delhi residence. Registration Certificate (RC) of the electric vehicle. Cancelled cheque or bank passbook showing account details for Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).
The Delhi government has said the final document checklist will be published when the portal goes live. Buyers should keep checking Delhi Transport Department's official website frequently for updates.
Who can claim the Subsidy?
The policy clearly states that only buyers who buy new battery electric vehicles from authorised dealerships in Delhi and register them in the National Capital Territory are eligible.
Who Is Not Eligible?
The subsidy will not be available for:
Used or pre-owned electric vehicles. EVs purchased outside Delhi or registered in another state. Hybrid vehicles which are excluded from purchase subsidies under the new policy.
While hybrids were previously considered for some tax concessions, the Delhi EV Policy 2026 only provides purchase incentives for fully battery-electric vehicles.
When the subsidy application portal is launched, prospective and recent EV buyers should prepare the documents in advance and apply within the 30-day window to avoid missing out on thousands of rupees in government incentives.
