But the DMK cadres in Tamil Nadu, who held demonstrations in some places to protest the arrest of Opposition Leader Udhayanidhi Stalin, held rallies and sang slogans against the police action. They were the protest of the party’s strongest reaction to the legal action taken against one of its leaders.
The demonstrations took place after Udhayanidhi Stalin was arrested by the police in Thanjavur for comments he made in a public meeting. The police action triggered widespread political opposition to the arrest and the DMK described it as an attempt to suppress the Opposition's voice. Party leaders said the arrest was motivated to disrupt Udhayanidhi's political and legislative engagement.
DMK workers converged on government offices, district headquarters and public places across the state carrying party flags and placards. Protesters chanted slogans demanding Udhayanidhi’s immediate release and accused the government of using law enforcement agencies to chase down political opponents. Senior party leaders spoke out against selective political action in various locations to supporters and criticized selective political action as well.
The protests were relatively peaceful though police were in place at the key points to keep order and maintain traffic and public movement not significantly disrupted. Authorities closely monitored the demonstrations and appealed to all to conduct their protests within the law.
The trouble with Udhayanidhi Stalin started after complaints were made and complaints about the remarks he made at a public meeting were filed. The police then conducted an investigation and arrested him for questioning. The Madras High Court later ordered the police to release him on station bail after he was questioned and said due legal requirements should be followed.
The High Court’s intervention was welcomed by DMK leaders who said it was a reaffirmation of constitutional safeguards and individual liberties. They said the judiciary had kept the legal process fair, and so the investigation continued.
On the statewide protests, DMK leaders also reiterated that peaceful dissent is a necessary part of a democratic system. They claimed that the arrest was a pointless act which was part of an effort to frighten the Opposition. Party representatives said Udhayanidhi Stalin had always said that he would cooperate with the investigation and face any legal consequences for any action against him.
But the government has maintained that the police action was legal and took place as a result of complaints regarding the public speech. They have denied the political vendetta and said that the investigation is independent of any individual and no individual is exempt.
Political analysts believe the episode has added another layer to the already heated political rivalry in Tamil Nadu. And arrests and legal proceedings involving senior political leaders are frequently a focus of public debate, and ruling and opposition parties use them to further their political narratives.
The demonstrations also showed the strength of the DMK as party cadres mobilized quickly across various districts to deal with the arrest. Protesters described the protests as a demonstration of solidarity with Udhayanidhi Stalin and their opposition for the legal process to be allowed to move through in peace without political pressure.
In social media, the issue was the subject of vigorous discussion: hashtags on Udhayanidhi Stalin, DMK and the protests all over the day. The party’s statewide mobilization was hailed, while others argued that legal proceedings should be free from political influence.

As legal experts noted, an arrest and questioning under investigation is not proof of wrongdoing. In Indian law, all accused persons are presumed innocent unless found guilty by a competent court. And they insisted the judicial system also provides protections to the rights of citizens while investigating agencies must carry out their responsibilities.
As the investigation continues the political debate over Udhayanidhi Stalin's comments will continue to dominate the conversation in Tamil Nadu. In the current political atmosphere, both legal proceedings and political responses will shape discussions in the forthcoming days and parties are going to continue to campaign and discuss the issue in public and in parliament.
