A Hume pipe bridge at Dudhia in the Darjeeling district has collapsed after heavy rainfall and a sudden rise in the water level of the Balasun River, once more disrupting an important road connection in the area.
The bridge was constructed only last year and was supposed to be an alternative for people travelling between Siliguri and Mirik.
The bridge collapsed because heavy rain made the Balasun River rise, reported ANI this month.
Heavy Rainfall Raises River Levels.
The collapse shows the vulnerability of temporary infrastructure in the hilly areas of northern West Bengal during periods of intense rainfall.
The Balasun River passes through the Dudhia area and can increase the flow of water very rapidly during heavy rain. This is just the latest incident when rainfall increased the river level and brought more pressure to the bridge structure.
A recent local report also reported the Hume pipe bridge to have been washed away after heavy rainfall during the night.
The Important Link Between Siliguri and Mirik.
The Dudhia crossing is important for residents, tourists and commercial traffic travelling between the Siliguri plains and Mirik in the Darjeeling hills.
The route has previously been disrupted due to damage to bridges and landslides. A Hume pipe bridge was constructed as a bridge to replace the Dudhia bridge, making the collapse of the previous one so significant for local connections.
A June 2026 report from Sikkim Express had already highlighted the importance of restoring a permanent and reliable connection after the Dudhey Hume Pipe Bridge was washed away during an earlier period of extreme rainfall.

Repeated Damage Raises Questions.
The recent collapse will increase the concerns about the longevity of temporary bridges and the susceptibility to monsoon rains and rising river levels in places with big rivers.
For those communities dependent on the route for daily travel, repetitive damage can cause serious problems. Longer travel routes, delays in transporting goods and fewer access to nearby towns can harm the people and businesses and tourism all have a negative impact on residents and businesses.
But the Darjeeling hills in particular need an infrastructure that is climate-resistant and strong in a way that they won’t have to contend with in the mountainous area, heavy rain and landslides can quickly disrupt the road connection.
Rebuild Connectivity Now.
The damage will be assessed and how quickly movement can be restored across the Balasun River.
It is the Dudhia Hume pipe bridge collapse that is not so much an infrastructure failure as it is yet another example of the problems faced by the people living in a mountainous region that is prone to extreme weather.
As the Siliguri-Mirik route serves the local community and visitors, getting back a safe and stable crossing is a top priority.
