Tamil Nadu's fractious politics in the last wake of the Election Commission of India, which has announced election symbols for the most highly anticipated political debutants and other key third-front players of the state. In a move that brought not only fan enthusiasm but, in fact, political analysts to action, Thalapathy Vijay’s Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has been announced for the ‘Whistle’ symbol while Kamal Haasan’s Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) has been named the ‘Battery Torch’ symbol to win the 2026 Assembly elections.
TVK, by Thalapathy Vijay: Blowing the ‘Whistle’ on Corruption
When given the ‘Whistle’ symbol that is now being allocated to TVK, actor/statesman Vijay views it as a massive branding coup. Earlier when the party urged people to come forward with a list of its 10 most prominent symbols — an even smaller list with some of its own designs. Yet supporters are already telling us that it may even be a “whistleblower” à la the ‘Whistle’ in Vijay’s campaign rhetoric.
Party insiders say the symbol is to be used as a “call to action” for Tamil Nadu youth to wake up and insist upon change. This is TVK’s formal return to the ballot box following the campaign to not run for the 2024 Lok Sabha and other by-polls, and to focus on addressing the need for grassroots changes.
Kamal Haasan and MNM: The ‘Battery Torch’ Is Back
The ‘Battery Torch’ symbol, for the all-time veteran Kamal Haasan, isn’t an adornment but, rather, a personal one that he worked with the Congress on when the party came on line in 2018. The only difficulty is that MNM might get together with Congress as an alliance based on the "Hand", so Haasan has done the unthinkable to hold on to the symbol of "Battery Torch".
Its symbol is enlightenment, and to remove the dark (corruption). Following their use of such a symbol in the 2019 Lok Sabha and the 2021 Assembly elections, MNM thinks some sort of regularity will enable ‘the ‘Torch’’ to consolidate its urban vote bank that always tilts to favour the ‘Torch’ in previous elections.

Multipolar Contest
And the 2026 elections could leave Tamil Nadu’s history being turned upside down. The traditional bipolarity of DMK vs AIADMK was challenged by:
- The TVK factor: Vijay has a big following for the first-time voters.
- MNM visibility: Kamal Haasan is appealing to an urban and educated population.
- NTK impact: Seeman's Naam Tamilar Katchi which is growing in rural areas.
So Next Steps: The campaign trail
Having now put the symbols in the hands, both parties will likely conduct large digital and field campaigns. “The Whistle will ring on every street, and the Torch will light the homes,” the local political commentator said to the symbolism today’s announcement meant. The allocation of the ECI, pending the summer of April-May 2026, terminates the “pre-production” period of this political drama for the state. This performance actually begins on those streets in Tamil Nadu.
