According to several videos and posts circulating on social media, students on the ground floor received their question papers on time and began writing the examination as scheduled. Students on the second and third floors reported to have been left waiting for a long time even though they asked the examination staff to give them the papers.

The alleged delay caused unrest among the aspiring students, and many of them questioned the fairness of the examination process. A fraction of the students said that the question papers were divided among candidates and there was no uniformity in the examination.

As frustration brewed, protests erupted in the examination centre. Students posted videos on the internet that showed students shouting slogans in front of examination officials and some footage appeared to show scattered answer sheets and dust and broken furniture in the building. All videos could not be checked independently, but they were widely shared on social media and gained attention.

In addition, some social media users said that the candidates were forced to write the examination in temporary tents and not in well-designed classrooms. Posts described the examination as poorly run and claimed hundreds of irregularities were found at the center. Local authorities had not officially confirmed these allegations at the time of writing.

This has reignited questions about the quality and credibility of competitive exams in India. For the last few years, a number of recruitment and entrance exams have been under fire for paper leaks, administrative lapses, and examination irregularities.

The NEET-UG 2024 paper leak scandal was the most prominent of them and led to a national outcry after questions about paper leaks and irregularities were made public on one of India’s largest medical entrance exams. Many agencies were investigating, court proceedings were taking place and students protested and held officials accountable.

Similarly, recruitment exams in other states have been accused of malpractice. The Maharashtra Teacher Eligibility Test scam exposed how exam papers were leaked in exchange for money, leading to multiple arrests and serious questions about recruitment systems. State-level recruitment tests (police, teacher and government job exams) have also been cancelled or re-examined on account of leakages or procedural failures.

While the Jaipur RPMC exam remains under investigation, the incident has only increased students' suspicion that competitive exams are being conducted in a fair and transparent way.

For lakhs of aspiring candidates, competitive exams are months of preparation and investment and hope of higher education or government jobs. Even allegations of irregularities can leave the exam process uncertain, increase stress and lower confidence.

Educational experts have been adamant that the security of examination and communication, digital monitoring systems, logistics and accountability systems will be better to safeguard students from any disruption during high-stakes exams so that the public can have confidence in the examination system in India.

The Jaipur examination centre will be reviewed and procedural lapses made during the RPMC examination will be looked into by officials. The students and parents are now waiting for a detailed explanation from the Government and to take any necessary action to ensure that no candidate is unfairly disadvantaged.

As India continues to conduct some of the world’s largest competitive examinations every year, incidents like these emphasize the importance of robust examination management systems. The disruption in a system due to logistical failure or other reasons has the potential to impact thousands of careers and transparency and efficiency are at the core of this.
