Monsoon Fury Brings Gurugram to a Standstill: Flooded Roads, 10-km Traffic Jams Trigger Work-From-Home Advisory

Gurugram witnessed one of its season’s heaviest spells of monsoon rainfall, with 82 mm of rain drenching the city within a short period, leaving roads submerged, traffic at a standstill, and daily life severely disrupted. Many parts of the Millennium City were flooded, roads were caved in, and commuters were stranded in the downpour, and it was not just waterlogging but also power outages.

Authorities, on the other hand, asked corporate offices to let employees work from home to help reduce traffic congestion, and weather forecasts indicated that more rain could follow.

Heavy Rain brings the city to a halt

The heavy rains flooded several major intersections, including Hero Honda Chowk, Rajiv Chowk, and other low-lying areas, where roads quickly disappeared under stagnant water.

Long lines of vehicles swarmed on important roads, with drivers stuck in traffic long lines of vehicles that sometimes took up to 10 km on crucial roads as drivers tried driving across flooded streets on roads where there were cars stuck in flooded roads. Many commuters were stuck in traffic for hours as emergency services tried to clear streets and assist stranded residents in the city to escape flooded streets and help those who had been stranded there for hours.

The situation was worsened by overflowing drains that failed to handle the sudden surge of rainwater.

School Bus Incident Raises Alarm

One of the most disturbing incidents occurred when a school bus of Chaitanya Techno School was seen to fall into a water-filled pit under floodwater.

At the time of the accident, the bus was transporting students, and nearby residents rushed to the scene and evacuated the children safely. There were no major injuries or casualties reported, but it was enough to highlight the danger of flooded roads during heavy rains for the children.

Road Cave-ins and Power Outages

Heavy rain also caused road cave-ins in several places, including the areas near the Deputy Commissioner’s residence.

The power outages in residential and commercial areas and schools in more upscale neighborhoods were flooded within minutes of the downpour. Residents shared photos and videos of flooded streets, flooded basements, and stranded cars on social media, and they expressed frustration over the ongoing civic problems they were experiencing.

Work-From-Home Advisory Issued

To curb congestion and alleviate road toll on the city’s already congested roads, Gurugram Police issued an advisory for corporate offices and private businesses to allow staff to work from home if possible.

The officials said reducing the number of vehicles on the roads would help emergency responders manage the situation much more quickly and allow critical services to operate more smoothly with fewer disruptions.

Residents Question Infrastructure Preparedness

The recent flooding has once again drawn criticism over Gurugram’s drainage infrastructure. Residents cited clogged stormwater drains, incomplete roadworks, and delayed civic projects that hadn’t been completed since October 2025.

Urban planning experts have repeatedly warned that rapid urbanisation without corresponding upgrades to drainage systems increases the city’s susceptibility to flash flooding during intense monsoon spells.

More Rain Likely

The weather authorities have forecast more showers in the coming days, and officials have warned residents to avoid unnecessary travel, monitor weather alerts, keep an eye out for weather updates, and be alert when driving through waterlogged areas.

No major casualties were reported, but the day’s events served as another reminder of the urgent need for long-term improvements to Gurugram’s drainage and urban infrastructure to better withstand extreme weather events.
