A huge fire erupted at a three-storey commercial complex near Ameerpet Metro Station in Hyderabad on Thursday, which led to an emergency response that was accompanied by massive fire which led to heavy traffic disruptions in one of the city’s biggest commercial hubs and caused a major traffic crunch for residents and commuters to shut down all roads leading up to the metro station and cause chaos at the city’s busiest commercial centre.
According to officials from the fire department, seven fire tenders were sent to the scene immediately, they said, with fire tenders arriving at once upon arrival at the location when they found out about the fire and they immediately began to search for fire crews and rescue and containment efforts to prevent the fire from spreading to adjacent buildings and other businesses.
The fire was so intense that massive numbers of people could be seen in the vicinity of the fire, and police were at the scene to secure the area and put in place emergency services.
At the scene, thick plumes of black smoke rose high above the commercial complex, with smoke billowing for miles out into the city. Water jets and specialised equipment were deployed by firefighters with protective gear at high altitudes to attack the flames from all directions. It took a long time to get firefighters to deal with combustible materials in the building and the crowded city, the authorities said.
None of the casualties or injuries has been reported so far. Each individual in and around the building was evacuated in time, it said, so no tragedy happened. Emergency teams went through every possible situation that might occur and did not find anyone in the building during the firefighting.
The exact cause of the fire is still unclear at this point, fire department officials said. The investigation will take place once the blaze is extinguished and the site is safe for inspection and electrical systems, storage facilities and other factors which could have contributed to the disaster are investigated, they said.

The fire also had a huge impact on traffic in the area. Hyderabad Traffic Police issued an advisory stating that the traffic movement between Ameerpet and SR Nagar had been severely affected by firefighting and emergency response activities. Long lines of vehicles were seen on some of the connecting roads as short distances of vehicles were temporarily stopped to get past the affected stretch.
We advised commuters to avoid the area and use alternate routes until normal traffic conditions could be restored. Public transport services and daily commuters were disrupted as emergency personnel worked. Traffic police officers were at key junctions to control vehicle movement and reduce congestion in the surrounding areas.
The incident has once again highlighted the importance of fire safety measures in commercial buildings, especially in densely populated urban centres. Safety compliance standards and emergency preparedness protocols will be looked at in the immediate period after the incident,” said a report from the safety-compliance group.
As firefighters continue to respond to the fire and work on the firefighting efforts, officials have assured residents that every effort is being made to bring the situation fully under control. Details regarding the extent of the damage and the cause of the fire will be determined once the site is thoroughly investigated.
