India Extends LPG Cylinder Refill Waiting Period to 25 Days Amid Fuel Supply Concerns

The Government of India has increased the minimum waiting period for booking a domestic LPG cylinder refill from 21 days to 25 days, a move aimed at ensuring stable supply during a period of global fuel uncertainty. The decision comes amid concerns about a potential energy crisis linked to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

Under the new rule, consumers who book a domestic Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinder must now wait at least 25 days before placing another refill request. Earlier, the waiting period was set at 21 days.

Officials from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas confirmed that the measure has been introduced to prevent panic booking and to ensure equitable distribution of LPG cylinders across the country.

Surge in Booking Requests

Following widespread reports of potential fuel shortages, gas agencies across India have been receiving an unusually high number of calls and booking requests from customers concerned about LPG availability. In many places, the surge in demand has caused booking servers to become temporarily busy.

Authorities have urged consumers not to panic, assuring the public that adequate domestic LPG stocks are being maintained and supply chains are functioning normally.

“Customers are requested to book their cylinders calmly and follow the prescribed rules. There is no need for immediate concern regarding domestic LPG supply,” officials said.

Reason Behind the Decision

The decision to extend the waiting period comes as global energy markets react to rising tensions in the Middle East. Concerns have grown after Iran threatened to restrict movement through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical oil and gas shipping routes.

Any disruption in this route could significantly impact global oil and gas supply, as a large share of energy exports from Gulf countries passes through the strait. India imports a major portion of its LPG requirements from Gulf nations, making the region crucial for the country’s energy security.

Sources say the waiting period extension is a precautionary step to manage demand and maintain steady supply for domestic users.

Government Urges Responsible Use

Officials have also advised consumers to use LPG responsibly and avoid unnecessary multiple bookings, emphasizing that the policy is intended to prevent supply disruption and ensure that every household receives its fair share of cooking gas.

While commercial LPG users such as hotels and catering services are currently facing greater supply challenges in some regions, authorities have reassured households that domestic cooking gas supply remains stable.

Experts believe the new policy will help stabilize distribution during periods of uncertainty in global energy markets while preventing hoarding and panic buying among consumers.
