IndiGo Flight Incident: Power Bank Catches Fire on Hyderabad-Chandigarh Flight

It was a power bank fire in the aircraft, and passengers aboard the flight from Hyderabad to Chandigarh on IndiGo faced panic. Quick emergency manoeuvres from cabin crew soon saw the incident take place, which led to a few minutes of escape by passenger evacuation.

The news reports that the incident occurred as the aircraft was preparing to take off or taxiing, and smoke and panic erupted in the cabin of the aircraft at the airfield within minutes. Accordingly, the passengers also apparently noticed sparks and smoke emanating from a power bank that was carried by one of the passengers, ringing alarms to those on board.

Cabin crews immediately used onboard fire prevention gear onboard the aircraft to isolate the device that was burning on the plane to reduce the spread of the fire within. The airline personnel onboard also took emergency safety precautions in order to ensure the safety of their passengers.

Eyewitnesses said they had moments of confusion and panic as smoke briefly passed through parts of the cabin. Some passengers began shouting for help, while the crew members told individuals to calm down during the emergency response, reports cited. The incident was reported, and the airport's emergency services and fire personnel were informed within minutes.

The passengers were evacuated from the plane as a precaution, and the technical team performed physical checks to ensure further safety. The case fortunately, no injuries or deaths were reported in the incident. That the fire was quickly extinguished in good condition before it grew into an elaborate onboard emergency, officials said.

Videos and photographs showing passengers nearby as their flight unfolded shortly afterwards, the evacuation, airport officials' inspection of it afterwards, airline air traffic guards inspecting the cabin, all of this had then been released on different social media platforms post the accident.

Again, this incident rekindled public concerns over lithium-ion battery safety in aerial traffic. In the worldwide fleet, power banks and battery-operated devices powered by lithium batteries are becoming a growing cause of in-flight fire hazards. And airline companies around the world have issued written warnings to the people in their own cabin of the risks of battery overheating, faulty electronic gadgets and improper storage.

Lithium-ion batteries, experts say, can spark a fire if broken, heated too much, overcharged or defective. For reasons of this nature, airlines prevent travellers from carrying power banks with checked baggage and tell them they must be carried for use only in the passenger cabin. IndiGo officials later told passengers that their safety was the airline’s top consideration and thanked the cabin crew for how the flight attendants handled it professionally and efficiently.

This incident will be covered by airlines, industry experts, as well as passengers and airlines concerned about passenger safety. The first response is an active, collaborative multiaspectral action. All this includes the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) also reviewing the matter and determining whether further principles regarding safety should also be set in place with regard to the use and handling of the electronic equipment onboard the aircraft as flown.

Some passengers are said to have booked non-stop flight services, and when the incidents did happen, they were delayed for a short time before making arrangements for other passengers to proceed. The timely reaction on the part of the flight crew, however, enabled an episode that would have been far more dangerous, aviation experts said.

They also highlighted the importance of passengers alerting crews while the flight is flying or the flight crew if electronic devices seem overheated or unhealthy. The latest experience is another reminder of the fundamental role that awareness of battery safety plays in today’s airline transport, as an airline adapts to the fact that passengers carry more and more electronic devices with them every day.
