The legal fraternity in Jharkhand is reeling after a shocking incident in the state capital. A 52-year-old practicing lawyer from the Jharkhand High Court, together with her two adult children, reportedly attempted suicide at home in the vicinity of the Bariatu police station late Monday night. The lawyer's son, a 28-year-old Chartered Accountant (CA), was declared dead on arrival at the hospital. The lawyer and her 24-year-old daughter are both also in critical condition, struggling to survive at a private medical facility.
Details of the Incident
The incident was reported Tuesday morning when neighbors observed unusual inactivity at the local household. When they arrived, they found all three family members unconscious. At that time local police were promptly notified and rushed to the scene. The three were taken to Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), where the son was pronounced dead. Later the mother and daughter were transferred to a private hospital for advanced treatment.
Investigations by the police and the "Suicide Note"
Preliminary investigations indicate that the family may have consumed a poisonous substance. Police sources say they have recovered a ‘suicide note’ from the crime scene, but it remains unclear what the motive was supposed to be. “We're at the stage of confirming the nature of the note and the handwriting. The material, he noted, “indicates a combination of personal suffering and financial hardship, but we are investigating it from all angles including any external pressure or harassment,” said a senior official of the Ranchi Police.
A Community in Mourning
The victim (the mother) is a prominent figure in the Jharkhand High Court, described by colleagues as a “diligent and soft-spoken professional.” The loss of her son, who had recently established a successful career as a CA, has stunned the local professional community. Jharkhand High Court Bar Association members expressed their condolences in detail and a call was made for a full and sensitive investigation into how the family was led to such an extreme step.
