In a pivotal incident that has rocked the Karnataka Police department, high-ranking IPS officer DGP Ramachandra Rao has suffered a major scandal. Today, videos supposedly featuring the officer with several women including a model in compromising positions inside his official office went viral on social media.
The Viral Controversy
The incident broke out after Asianet Suvarna News, among other local media outlets, aired footage that alleged DGP Ramachandra Rao was seen engaging in inappropriate behavior while wearing full uniform and acting on duty. The videos, which have circulated quickly on platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and WhatsApp, are said to capture the officer with women in his chamber in the police headquarters. The timing and location of the videos an official government office have generated intense public outrage, with many casting a pall over the discipline and integrity of the state’s top brass.
The officer's defense: AI Conspiracy?
IPS Ramachandra Rao has since denied the allegation, following the viral frenzy. He has asserted the videos were "doctored" and are created by AI and Deepfake technology. This officer said is a "deep-rooted conspiracy" that seeks to mess with his reputation, especially after he went back to work recently. He has called for a technical forensic investigation to prove the videos are fakes.
Government Response: CM Siddaramaiah Fumes
The Karnataka government is handling the incident sternly. Siddaramaiah, the Chief Minister has expressed grave dissatisfaction; he asks how it can be done in the context of a high-security government office when the officer is wearing uniform.
- Order to Inquiry: The Home Department is asked to report on the authenticity of the videos.
- Political Heat: Opposition leaders, including former Home Minister Araga Jnanendra, have criticized the Congress government, which they say has eroded moral values and administrative control in the police force.
A Pattern of Controversies
The news of DGP Ramachandra Rao making headline, this is hardly the first time it’s been for the wrong reason. In March 2025, he was put on compulsory leave, after his stepdaughter, Kannada actor Ranya Rao, was arrested at Bengaluru International Airport on charge of smuggling 14.2 kg of gold. He was recently recalled from leave and appointed the DGP of the Directorate of Civil Rights Enforcement in August 2025.
