A section of a highway embankment near Nippani in Karnataka has collapsed, raising concerns about the quality of construction and raising questions as to what could be the cause of such an incident.

A couple of commuters said if the collapse had occurred during peak traffic hours, the consequences would have been much worse.

A very technical investigation would then be done to determine the specific cause of the embankment collapse, officials said.
If there are any problems in construction quality or contract execution, then they would take a look at the agencies involved.
In the meantime, repair work is expected to begin after engineers take a comprehensive safety check.
