The dispute centres around Professor Devaraj Thangadurai, a professor in the Department of Botany. According to the complaint, PhD scholar Vedavyas Chavhan was mentally harassed and academically pressured by the professor.

The student claims that the professor had a relationship with a female student and then tried to contact her after communication between them ceased. Chavhan claims that he was encouraged by the professor to help reunite with the student. The professor was quoted in the complaint as saying that if he failed to bring the student back into contact, he would have difficulty completing his PhD programme.

The allegations have shocked many students on campus, as they involve claims of misuse of academic authority and personal interference. Chavhan also said he was subjected to mental stress and intimidation. He also accused the professor of acting inappropriately and creating an atmosphere that hindered his academic progress and well-being.

The student claims that he and several student groups brought the matter to the attention of university authorities on many occasions. But so far no concrete action has been taken by these organizations and there is no concrete action so far. This perceived indifference is a cause of great disappointment among students who believe that reports of serious allegations should be answered promptly and transparently.

Students and student organisations protested in front of the Vice-Chancellor's office on the day of the allegations. The demonstrators called on the professor to be immediately suspended until the investigation had finished and the allegations were made public.

Student leaders stressed that universities need an environment that is safe and supportive for all scholars, and research students who are heavily influenced in their academic careers by supervisors and faculty members. They recommended more grievance redressal mechanisms and better accountability in the institutions of education.

The incident has opened up broader discussions in higher education about power dynamics and the vulnerability of research scholars who may feel pressured when disputes arise with senior faculty. Many students have asked the university administration to make sure complaints are handled fairly and that no student faces retaliation for raising concerns.

For now, university officials have not publicly announced how any inquiry into the matter has been carried out. The allegations are still claims made by the complainant, and no official findings have been published. Students and stakeholders are waiting for the administration’s response on what it will do now and how it will respond to the dispute.

The case is a cause of great concern in the academic community and speaks to the need for transparency, accountability and trust in educational institutions. Whether it is through disciplinary action or an independent investigation, students are looking for a solution that is fair to all parties involved while maintaining the school's academic culture and integrity.
