Several parts of Karnataka are braced for continued downpours after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a Yellow Alert for 15 districts in the state as well. After a week of occasional heavy rainfall last week, the department has predicted thunderstorms and high-velocity winds today for the northern and coastal parts of Karnataka, especially in the northern and coastal regions.
Bengaluru residents woke up to overcast skies. Although the city is anticipated to remain cloudy throughout the day, the IMD predicted moderate rainfall for the evening.
15 Districts Under Yellow Alert
The weather department has warned of moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by lightning and thunder in the following districts:
- North Karnataka: Bidar, Kalaburagi, Yadgir, Vijayapura, Bagalkote, Belagavi, Dharwad, and Haveri.
- Coastal Region: Uttara Kannada, Udupi, and Dakshina Kannada.
- Malnad & South Interior: Shimoga, Chikmagalur, Hassan, and Kodagu.
Regional Rainfall Patterns
The intensity of rainfall is expected to vary between different geographical zones:
- Coastal and North Interior Karnataka: Districts like Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, and Uttara Kannada, and northern areas such as Vijayapura, Bagalkote, Kalaburagi, and Raichur are likely to see consistent thundershowers.
- South Interior Karnataka: Ballari, Vijayanagar, Davangere, Chitradurga, and Tumakuru are expected to see increased activity. In those regions, gusty winds with speeds of 30-40 km/h are expected along with rain.
- Rest of the state: Most of the other regions should remain dry, but cloud cover around them might remain.
Safety Advisory
As the forecast is for strong winds and lightning, the IMD is warning residents in the alert zones to not shelter under trees or near electric poles during the storm. Farmers from the Malnad and North Karnataka areas have also been warned to protect harvested crops from the sudden showers.
